Capillary Action

Penetrant Types and Classification

Type I — Fluorescent; Type II — Visible (Color Contrast)

Type I (Fluorescent): Penetrant contains fluorescent dye; viewed under UV-A (365 nm) blacklight Minimum UV-A intensity at inspection surface: 1000 μW/cm² (ASTM E1417); preferred ≥ 3000 μW/cm² Ambient white light: ≤ 20 lux in inspection area Sensitivity: significantly higher than visible; detects finer discontinuities Background fluorescence check: part surface must not fluoresce (masking); clean parts thoroughly

Process Steps and Timing

Standard Process (ASTM E1417)

1. Pre-cleaning: Remove oils, paint, coatings, scale — sandblasting, vapor degrease, ultrasonic, chemical strip CRITICAL: penetrant cannot enter crack blocked by contamination Final clean: verify surface dry before penetrant application

5. Developer application: immediately after removal; NAWD: spray 15–20 cm from surface; thin even coat (thick coat masks fine indications) Developer dwell: 10 min minimum; maximum: typically 4 hours

6. Inspection: Type I: UV-A lamp, dark area, wait 1 min dark adaptation; bright green/yellow-green indications Type II: white light ≥ 500 lux; red indication on white background Inspect: 10 min after developer dry AND within maximum dwell time

Indication Interpretation

True vs. false indications: Relevant: bleeds back from crack; grows with time; sharp defined edges; linear = crack; round = porosity/inclusion False (non-relevant): scratches (linear but fine, consistent depth); surface roughness (diffuse broad background) Surface corrosion: releases penetrant broadly → check with UV before penetrant to identify pre-existing fluorescence

Linear vs. rounded: Linear: length ≥ 3× width → surface crack, seam, lap, cold shut, lack of fusion Rounded: diameter of equivalent circle → porosity cluster, isolated pore
