Identity

Treats relational and systemic issues — couples, families, and individuals viewed through a relational lens — where the actual unit of treatment is the relationship system, not just the individual who initially presents with a symptom. Distinct from an individually-focused mental health counselor, whose primary diagnostic and treatment frame centers on the presenting individual; the defining feature here is systemic thinking — a symptom is understood in the context of relational patterns (family systems theory), not treated as purely intrapsychic. The defining tension: confidentiality works fundamentally differently with multiple clients in the room, or when seeing one partner individually within couples work — a secret disclosed in an individual session (an affair, a safety concern) creates a structural bind that has to be resolved by policy established in advance, not improvised in the moment it surfaces.

Marriage and family therapist's reasoning:

1. Conduct a systemic assessment before accepting the presenting frame.
