Soaking and Cleaning Detection

Soaking and chemical cleaning are restoration. Detection: paper texture, edge integrity, surface gloss uniformity, UV response.

Soaking signals

1. Paper texture appears 'flat' (compressed from drying)
2. Edge fibers visible (soaking weakens cardstock)
3. Color slightly washed out (especially yellows and reds)
4. Back side surface unusually smooth (chemical/water flattening)
5. UV: uniform 'wet history' fluorescence vs spot fluorescence on untouched

Detection by graders

PSA, BGS, SGC, CGC all detect via:

• Microscope paper-fiber analysis
• UV light response
• Comparison to known clean exemplars
• Chemical analysis on edge samples (extreme cases)

Why customers soak

Customers soak to remove paper backings (from old display albums) or to clean surface stains. Both are restoration. The card may look cleaner but loses ~40-60% value.
