Intent Classification
Four intent types: informational, navigational, commercial, transactional. Match content to intent; mismatching loses both rankings and conversions.
Intent types
| Intent | Example | Page type |
|---|
| Informational | 'how to grade a card' | Blog, guide, tutorial |
| Navigational | 'PSA card grading' | Brand/company page |
| Commercial investigation | 'PSA vs BGS' | Comparison, review |
| Transactional | 'PSA submission service' | Service page, checkout |
Identifying intent
Read the SERP for the keyword:
- Top 10 results all blog posts → informational
- Brand homepage dominates → navigational
- Comparison guides + reviews → commercial
- Service pages + product listings → transactional
- Mixed → user need is ambiguous; pick dominant pattern
Mismatching consequences
- Optimize a product page for 'how to grade a card' → won't rank (Google wants blog)
- Optimize blog for 'CardPrepAI pricing' → won't rank (Google wants pricing page)
- Mixing intents on one page → ranks for nothing
Match intent → match page type → rank.
