a11y-init

Wire Layer 0 (prevention) into the current project. All logic lives in the CLI — this skill runs it and explains the result.

Flow

1. Run:

   npx --yes @aidevme/a11y init <path>
   

   Add --with-precommit to also install a host-independent git pre-commit gate, and/or --with-hooks to opt into the Claude-Code-specific UserPromptSubmit/PreToolUse enforcement hooks shipped with this plugin. Both are off by default and additive — pass either, both, or neither. (scripts/run-init.sh wraps the base command.)

2. The CLI detects the framework (React, Fluent, Vue, Angular, Svelte, static HTML) and the agent hosts present, then:

   • creates A11Y.md with a generated block tailored to the detected stack (or refreshes only the marked block, preserving user content);
   • creates .a11yrc.json if absent — never overwrites an existing one, except that --with-hooks merge-patches in hooksEnabled: true even into an existing file (the only field it will ever add to a config it didn't create);
   • appends a one-line pointer to each existing host file (CLAUDE.md, .cursorrules, AGENTS.md, .github/copilot-instructions.md), idempotently;
   • with --with-precommit, installs .git/hooks/pre-commit (skipped outside a git repo, never clobbers a pre-existing hook it didn't install).

3. Report what was created / updated / unchanged, and explain the profile default (standard = WCAG 2.2 AA; see references/profiles.md for strict and mvp).

4. Re-running is always safe — tell the user that regenerating after adding rule packs keeps A11Y.md in sync with the audit rules (single source of truth).

Notes

• If no host files exist, only A11Y.md + .a11yrc.json are created; suggest which host file the user's setup would benefit from, but do not invent files unasked.
• --with-hooks only sets the opt-in marker; it does not itself register the hooks (Claude Code already registers whatever .github/plugins/a11y/hooks/hooks.json declares once the plugin is installed — the marker is what makes those hook scripts actually act instead of silently no-op'ing). See docs/safety-and-guardrails.md for exactly what the hooks can and can't do, and how to turn them back off (hooksEnabled: false in .a11yrc.json — re-running init without --with-hooks does not do this for you).
