Diff Snapshot

Show file-level changes between two snapshots or between a snapshot and the live filesystem.

When to use

• Reviewing what a snapshot contains
• Comparing two points in time before rollback
• Auditing changes made to a subvolume

Inputs to gather

• Snapper config name
• Snapshot IDs (two numbers; 0 means current filesystem)
• Path filter (optional; e.g., /etc, /home)

Procedure

1. Preflight: Verify snapper is installed and config exists.
2. Run sudo snapper -c <config> status <id1>..<id2> to get a summary of changed files.
3. Run sudo snapper -c <config> diff <id1>..<id2> (or with path filter) to show detailed diffs.
4. Render output: file status (added/removed/modified) and line-level diffs if text.

Output / side effects

Displays diff output. No state change.

Read-only query. Requires sudo.
