Apply Growth Mindset Coaching
Build a growth mindset culture in athletes by consistently linking effort to improvement, reframing failure as information, and modeling the learning process in how you coach.
Why This Is Best Practice
Adopted by: US Olympic and Paralympic Committee mental performance programs, NCAA Division I coaching staffs, and elite youth academies (including Ajax, Aspire Academy, and IMG Academy) explicitly teach growth mindset principles. Numerous national governing bodies include Dweck's framework in their coaching education curricula.
Impact: Dweck (2006) experimental studies showed that teaching a growth mindset improved academic performance in students from underperforming schools significantly more than control conditions. In sport: Gucciardi et al. (2009) found that athletes coached in growth mindset frameworks showed greater resilience after performance setbacks and higher perceived competence. Athletes with growth mindsets practice more deliberately, persist longer through plateaus, and view competition as a test rather than a threat.
Why best: Praise or reward systems targeting outcomes (see apply-positive-reinforcement-training) shape a specific behavior; growth mindset coaching instead targets the athlete's causal belief about why ability changes, which generalizes across skills, opponents, and adversity rather than reinforcing one narrow behavior.
Steps
1. Understand the two mindset states (and that they shift)
Athletes are not permanently in a fixed or growth mindset — they shift between them by context:
- Growth mindset belief: ability is developed through effort and practice; failure is information; challenge is welcome
- Fixed mindset belief: ability is innate; failure reveals a lack of talent; challenge is a threat
Coaches can trigger either state depending on what they praise, how they respond to errors, and what they signal matters.
2. Praise effort and process, not talent or outcome
The most direct mindset intervention is praise targeting:
- Fixed mindset praise: "You're so naturally talented at this." / "You're a natural leader."
- Growth mindset praise: "The way you broke down that skill and practiced it repeatedly — that's why you improved." / "Your commitment to the team this week was visible in how you played."
Apply this consistently across all feedback interactions (see design-feedback-delivery-system).
3. Reframe failure as information, not verdict
When an athlete fails or underperforms:
- Don't: minimize ("It's fine, you played well"), attribute to fixed factors ("She's better than you"), or ignore
- Do: treat it as data — "What did you learn about your game today?" / "What would you do differently with the same situation?"
The post-failure coaching conversation is the highest-leverage growth mindset moment. Make it a ritual.
4. Use "Not Yet" language
When athletes judge their ability ("I can't do this," "I'm bad at free kicks"):
- Replace the judgment with a developmental frame: "You haven't mastered it yet."
- Introduce the concept of the learning curve: show examples of athletes who struggled before excellence
Teach athletes that confusion and difficulty are signals they're learning something beyond their current level — not signals to stop.
5. Model growth mindset as a coach
Athletes learn mindset from watching their coach respond to:
- Team losses: Do you blame, make excuses, or reflect + correct?
- Your own coaching errors: Do you acknowledge mistakes or hide them?
- Uncertainty: Do you say "I don't know, let me find out" or pretend certainty?
Narrate your own learning: "I watched tape of yesterday's session and realized my drill design wasn't right — here's what I've changed."
6. Design the training environment for challenge
Growth mindset is reinforced by training environments where:
- Failure is inevitable (drills are at or above current skill level)
- The focus of discussion is what to try differently, not who performed best
- Progress is measured against the athlete's own baseline, not against teammates
- Effort is recognized regardless of outcome
7. Challenge fixed mindset moments directly (with care)
When an athlete expresses a fixed belief: "I just don't have the speed gene" or "Some people are born leaders":
- Don't argue immediately — it triggers defensiveness
- Ask: "What does speed feel like when you've improved it in the past? What did that take?"
- Share examples of athletes who developed the quality through deliberate work
Common Mistakes
- Praising effort regardless of strategy: "You tried hard" when the athlete is using a counterproductive approach misses the point. Praise effective effort + strategy.
- Ignoring fixed mindset under pressure: Growth mindset messaging during easy periods doesn't transfer. Test it under adversity.
- Thinking one conversation changes mindset: Mindset shifts from hundreds of consistent interactions, not a single team talk or video.
When NOT to Use
- Specific technical instruction sessions — focus on mechanics, not mindset framing.
- Post-serious injury — emotional processing takes priority over growth mindset messaging.
