# channel-strip A native macOS companion app that plays audio engineer for a Behringer Wing Rack — closed-loop gain staging, calibration wizards, scenes, and drift detection for a one-mic YouTube rig. ## The chain ``` SM7B → Cloudlifter (+25dB fixed) → Wing Rack (preamp + full DSP strip) → USB-C → Mac ``` The dbx 286s and 166xs retire: every stage that remains is either fixed-transparent (Cloudlifter) or API-addressable (Wing). That's the design constraint that makes the app possible — the software can *read and write* every parameter that matters. ## Architecture Dual-path: - **Control path** — Wing remote protocol (TCP, community-documented) for parameter read/write, scenes, and live meter subscription. - **Truth path** — CoreAudio tap on the USB return for measurements the mixer doesn't compute: LUFS (ITU-R BS.1770), noise floor, crest factor, spectral tilt. The app both *hears* the result and *turns* the knobs. Calibration wizard closes the loop: speak a sentence → measure → adjust over the wire → re-measure → converge. UI is [Native SDK](https://github.com/vercel-labs/native) — declarative `.native` markup, logic in Zig, no browser, no WebView. The audio DSP and protocol client are plain Zig linking CoreAudio directly. ## Status **Spike.** Proving the riskiest assumption first: that we can talk to a Wing (emulator, then hardware) from Zig — read/write a preamp gain, subscribe to meters. - `spike/` — Zig protocol client experiments - `.brain/resources/channel-strip-plan.svx` — full plan: gear decisions, episode arc, tracer bullets - `.brain/resources/wing-protocol-notes.svx` — protocol recon receipts ## Why this exists It's rad, it's fun, and the build is the content: the mic chain being built is the mic chain recording the series about building it. Audio quality across the episodes is the proof of work.
