- Use when: write a handoff so another session or agent can resume work without context loss.
Goal: capture enough state that the next worker continues immediately.
Use for:
- ending a session with work in progress
- passing a task to another agent or teammate
- checkpointing before a risky or long-running step
Workflow:
1. State the goal and current status in two sentences.
2. List what is done and verified, with evidence.
3. List what remains, in priority order.
4. Record key decisions and the reasons behind them.
5. Note blockers, open questions, and known risks.
6. Point to the exact files, branches, and commands involved.
Handoff contents:
- objective and acceptance criteria
- done vs. remaining
- decisions and rejected alternatives
- blockers and next concrete action
Rules:
- write for someone with zero prior context
- link specifics, not vague references
- separate verified facts from assumptions
- make the very next step unambiguous
