| description | Analyze job descriptions, diagnose resume-to-role fit, rewrite resume content with STAR, and generate tailored resume variants for Chinese job-search scenarios. Use when Codex needs to optimize a Chinese or English resume for a target JD, compare resume gaps against a role, improve ATS keyword alignment for domestic hiring platforms, rewrite project or work experience bullets, or prepare separate versions for big tech, startups, foreign companies, state-owned enterprises, and traditional enterprises. |
Resume Tailor
Overview
Use this skill to turn a raw JD and an existing resume into a targeted resume strategy, a gap diagnosis, and a revised resume that fits the intended role and company type.
Keep the output practical, recruiter-minded, and faithful to the candidate's real experience. Prefer clear claims, quantified impact, and keywords that naturally align with the target role.
Default to Chinese hiring norms unless the user explicitly asks for an English-first or international-style resume.
Workflow
Follow this order unless the user explicitly asks for a single step only:
- Analyze the JD and extract the role's target profile.
- Compare the current resume against that profile and diagnose the gap.
- Rewrite weak sections, especially project and work experience bullets.
- Adjust tone and emphasis for the target company type if requested.
- Run a final ATS and credibility check before presenting the result.
If the user provides only a JD, perform Step 1 first and explain what additional resume material is needed for the next stage.
If the user provides a resume and a JD, complete Steps 1-5 in one pass when feasible.
Inputs To Request
Ask only for the minimum missing inputs:
- Target JD or a prior JD analysis
- Current resume content
- Intended company type: big tech, startup, foreign company, state-owned enterprise, or traditional enterprise
- Desired output language if it is not obvious
- Any hard constraints such as page limit, section order, or truthfulness boundaries the user wants preserved
- Target seniority if it affects content selection: intern, campus hire, early-career, experienced hire, management
Make a reasonable assumption when one of these is missing and the risk is low. State the assumption briefly in the final response.
Step 1: Analyze The JD
Extract and organize:
core_responsibilities: 3-5 role-defining responsibilities
required_skills: hard skills, tools, methods, domain knowledge
soft_skills: communication, ownership, collaboration, learning, stakeholder handling
keywords: ATS-friendly recurring terms and phrases
hidden_requirements: signals about culture, pace, ambiguity tolerance, process maturity, business direction
When the user asks for JD analysis only, return a compact table and keep phrasing close to recruiter language.
For Chinese JDs, pay extra attention to:
- Whether the role is execution-heavy or strategy-heavy
- Whether the team expects cross-functional coordination with product, operations, sales, or clients
- Whether the company values fast growth, stable delivery, compliance, or organizational maturity
- Whether the posting favors industry background, platform experience, or school pedigree
Step 2: Diagnose Resume Fit
Compare the resume against the JD and provide:
- An overall match score from 0-100
- A one-sentence summary of current competitiveness
- Strengths already aligned with the role
- Gaps or missing evidence against the role
- Expression problems: vague verbs, weak ownership, missing outcomes, unclear scope
- ATS risks: absent keywords, inconsistent terminology, sections that may be ignored by parsers
- 3-5 highest-priority fixes
Do not punish the candidate for lacking experience that the resume may simply fail to articulate. Distinguish between a true gap and an evidence gap.
For Chinese resumes, also check:
- Whether the opening summary is too empty or too long
- Whether bullet points are responsibility-only and lack business results
- Whether platform/tool names are written in the terminology recruiters actually search
- Whether the strongest match appears early enough for a recruiter scanning in 10-20 seconds
- Whether the resume overuses self-praise such as "responsible, proactive, hardworking" without evidence
Step 3: Rewrite Resume Content
Use STAR for project and experience bullets whenever the user asks for optimization, rewriting, or stronger persuasion.
For each rewritten bullet or paragraph:
- Make the situation concise and relevant.
- Clarify the user's role, ownership, and goal.
- Highlight actions that map to target-job skills and methods.
- Quantify outcomes with at least one metric when the source supports it.
- Prefer strong, specific verbs over generic claims.
- Integrate JD keywords naturally rather than stuffing them.
If metrics are missing, ask for them when they materially affect credibility. If the user cannot provide metrics, use cautious phrasing such as "supported", "contributed", or "helped deliver" instead of inventing precision.
Default constraint for project rewrites:
- Keep each project description around 80-120 Chinese characters unless the user requests another format.
- Preserve factual accuracy and avoid exaggeration.
When rewriting in Chinese:
- Prefer short, dense, business-oriented sentences
- Put action and result earlier in the sentence than background
- Use common domestic hiring terms when natural, for example
独立负责, 推动落地, 协同, 复盘, 提效, 转化, 优化
- Avoid machine-translated English expressions and empty management jargon
Chinese Resume Defaults
Unless the user asks otherwise, prefer this structure for a Chinese resume:
- Basic information
- Job intention or professional summary
- Work experience or internship experience
- Project experience
- Education
- Skills and certificates if relevant
Default formatting guidance:
- Keep the whole resume within 1-2 A4 pages
- Prioritize recent and relevant experience
- Use 3-5 bullets per major experience block
- Keep each bullet focused on one achievement or one clear responsibility-result chain
- Avoid long paragraphs except for a short summary section
If the user is a campus candidate, move education and internship/project evidence higher. If the user is experienced, move work achievements higher and compress campus details.
Step 4: Tailor By Company Type
When the user asks for versioning, change both emphasis and tone. See references/company-types.md and references/china-resume-guidelines.md for the adaptation guide.
In general:
- Big tech: emphasize data, scale, complexity, cross-team collaboration, system thinking
- Startup: emphasize versatility, speed, ownership, ambiguity handling, 0-to-1 execution
- Foreign company: emphasize structured communication, cross-cultural collaboration, process discipline, English ability
- State-owned enterprise: emphasize stability, compliance, coordination, policy awareness, process discipline, and reliable delivery
- Traditional enterprise: emphasize industry depth, stability, implementation reliability, long-term delivery
Reorder bullet priority if needed so the most relevant evidence appears earlier.
Step 5: Final Quality Check
Before returning the final draft, verify:
- The most important JD keywords appear naturally in the resume
- The strongest evidence is easy to spot within the first screen or first half-page
- Bullets show actions and outcomes, not only responsibilities
- Claims are believable and trace back to the user's real experience
- The final version fits the requested length, usually 1-2 pages
If the target is a Chinese hiring platform such as Boss Zhipin, Liepin, or Lagou, ensure role titles, tools, industries, and business metrics are easy to skim and searchable.
Output Patterns
Use the simplest structure that matches the request:
- JD analysis only: return a table
- Fit diagnosis: return score, one-line summary, strengths, gaps, expression issues, ATS risks, and top fixes
- Section rewrite: return the revised section first, followed by 2-4 short notes on why it is stronger
- Full tailored resume: return copy-ready content and a short note explaining which company type or role it best fits
- Full Chinese resume rewrite: return copy-ready content with section headings that can be pasted into a Chinese resume document
Match the user's language unless they ask for bilingual or English output.
When producing Chinese output, prefer direct recruiter-facing language over explanatory prose.
Guardrails
- Never fabricate employers, titles, projects, tools, or quantified results
- Never imply sole ownership if the source suggests team delivery
- Avoid empty buzzwords unless the JD explicitly depends on them
- Prefer evidence over adjectives
- Flag contradictions or suspicious claims instead of smoothing them over
- Do not blindly apply English resume norms if they make the Chinese version harder to scan
