# QA Wolf CLI `qawolf` runs QA Wolf flows locally, calls the QA Wolf public API, and drives interactive runners: live cloud pods holding a browser you can see and act on. This file is an overview, not a reference. Before first using a command whose flags are not shown here, run `qawolf <command> --help` once. The installed CLI is authoritative for flags and always matches its version; reuse that syntax for the rest of the task. ## Auth Commands that talk to QA Wolf authenticate via the `QAWOLF_API_KEY` environment variable (or stored credentials from `qawolf auth login`). `read` and `write` commands require auth; `local` commands do not, unless their table entry notes a flag that switches them to `read`. Verify with `qawolf auth whoami`. Never print or log the key. A team API key in the environment is the whole credential, including for the `runner` group. Nothing needs a browser login, a session token or a held connection, so a sandbox that can set one environment variable and make requests to one host can do everything below. Commands use `https://app.qawolf.com` by default. Set `QAWOLF_HOST_URL` to target another deployment host, for example `https://app.staging.example.com`. `QAWOLF_API_URL` is a separate API endpoint and does not select the deployment host used by CLI commands. Resolve the target environment once per task. Use `QAWOLF_ENVIRONMENT` when it is set; otherwise select an id or alias from `qawolf --json environment find` and reuse it. Shell invocations may not share exported variables, so pass the selected environment explicitly instead of rediscovering it. Check the command's help for its environment flag: variable commands use `--environment-id`; `qawolf flows run` uses `--env`; and `qawolf runner run` uses `--env-id`, which falls back to `QAWOLF_ENVIRONMENT` when neither it nor `--env-file` is passed. To give one run a value the environment does not hold, keep the environment and add `--env-var NAME=VALUE`; it replaces the environment's value for that run only. If multiple environments are returned and the task context does not identify the target, ask instead of guessing. Do not default to the newest environment. `qawolf environment listVariableNames` intentionally returns names only. A listed name is enough to reference `process.env.NAME` in flow code; do not ask for its value merely because the CLI does not return it. ## Interactive runners cost money An interactive runner is a live pod holding a browser, and it is billed while it runs. `qawolf runner launch` starts one; `qawolf runner run` starts one too when no runner is already available, and says so when it does. Reading a runner counts as activity, so `qawolf runner events --follow` left open keeps it alive and billing. `qawolf runner terminate` is what ends it, so terminate a runner you launched rather than leaving it to time out. `qawolf runner launch` remembers its runner as this directory's default, so the commands that follow need no `--runner`. Override that default for one command with `--runner <id>`, or for a whole session with `QAWOLF_RUNNER_ID`. Runner commands work in the workspace `qawolf auth switch` saved, which is shared by every session on the machine. When more than one session may be working in different workspaces, pass `--workspace-id <id>` to every runner command instead of switching; it applies to that command only and is never saved. ## Output When consuming output programmatically, always pass `--json` (or `--agent`). Human-formatted output is not stable across versions. Errors go to stderr; a non-zero exit code means the command failed. Reuse successful read results within a task unless a relevant write or target change could make them stale. One exception to know about: on `qawolf runner events`, `--json` also switches each printed line from the payload alone to the whole envelope (`sequence`, `recordedAt`, `payload`). Both are JSON. Pass it when you want to page by sequence, omit it when you want the payloads themselves. A `--json` response shows you most of its own shape, so read it first. `qawolf run get` is the exception worth reading about before you use it. A suite run can hold hundreds of flows, so start with `--flow-statuses failed` and widen only if you need the rest. Its artifact URLs expire, its failure fields are absent from a passing run, and its `traceUrl` downloads a Playwright trace that you can read as JSON without opening the trace viewer. **Read [`references/run-results.md`](references/run-results.md) before reporting on a run's outcome or opening its trace.** If that path is not on your filesystem, fetch it: `https://raw.githubusercontent.com/qawolf/cli/main/skills/qawolf-cli/references/run-results.md`. ## Safety: reads vs writes Read commands do not change team data, but some have operational effects noted in their command entry. Write commands act on the real team. Do not invent configuration or write speculative values; write only when requested or when the task requires missing configuration whose exact value is known. A successful write response is confirmation, so do not read immediately only to verify it. Never blind-retry a write on timeout: it may have reached the server the first time. Two runner-specific costs to keep in mind. Launching a runner starts a billed pod, so reuse one id rather than minting new ones per step, and stop a runner when you are done. And `run`, `act` and `exec` may all have taken effect even when their answer never arrives, so none of them is safe to blind-retry; `run` is the expensive one, because a second submission bills a second run. ## Git-backed workflows Inspect `git status` before publishing. Stage and commit only files changed for the current task, preserve unrelated worktree changes, then push the task's current branch. The platform reads flows from the environment's flow code branch, not from your task branch. `qawolf --json environment get` reports it as `flowCodeBranch` (`name`, `syncStatus`, `lastSyncedCommitHash`). A flow has a platform page, an id, and a place in `qawolf flows list --remote` only once it is on that branch and the environment has reconciled the commit. To link or run a new flow on the platform: integrate the flow code branch into your work, push the flow to that branch, poll `environment get` until `lastSyncedCommitHash` includes your commit, then read the flow's `flowId` and `url` from `qawolf --json flows list --remote --env <environment> --include-drafts`. Send that `url`; never guess a route and never send a repository link in its place. ## Commands <!-- commands-table:start — generated by `bun run generate`, do not edit --> <!-- prettier-ignore --> | Command | Kind | What it does | | --- | --- | --- | | `qawolf agent get` | read | Read what the QA Wolf AI has said and whether it is still working | | `qawolf agent send` | write | Ask the QA Wolf AI to do a piece of work, such as covering a journey or fixing a broken flow | | `qawolf attempt get` | read | Get a finished run attempt: its run and flow status, its place among that flow's attempts in the run, and signed links to its logs, trace, and video when they were captured. | | `qawolf attempt inspect` | read | Inspect one kind of evidence for a finished attempt | | `qawolf attempt investigate` | read | Summarize the evidence for one finished attempt | | `qawolf auth login` | local | Authenticate with QA Wolf in a browser or with an API key | | `qawolf auth logout` | local | Remove stored credentials | | `qawolf auth switch` | local | Choose which workspace to work in | | `qawolf auth whoami` | read | Show authentication status | | `qawolf build create` | write | Create a build from a file uploaded with build.requestUpload. Reads the app ID, name, version and build number from the file before it answers, or refuses a file that isn't an app. Calling it again with the same buildId answers the build the first call created, unchanged: a repeated call's branch, commitSha and environment are ignored. | | `qawolf build delete` | write | Delete a build. Runs never install a deleted build. Deleting an environment's latest build makes the previous one its latest. Runs install that build only if its file is still kept: only the latest builds of static environments are kept past the bucket's expiry, 180 days after upload on QA Wolf's cloud. Answers the build with deletedAt set. Deleting a deleted build answers it unchanged. | | `qawolf build get` | read | Get a build: its app, platform, version and environment. Deleted builds are returned too. | | `qawolf build list` | read | List the workspace's undeleted builds, newest first. With latestOnly, list what the environment's next run installs. | | `qawolf build requestDownload` | read | Get a URL to download a build's file. Deleted builds can be downloaded while their file exists. Answers 404 when the file has expired. | | `qawolf build requestUpload` | write | Get a URL to upload an app build: an .apk, .aab or .ipa, up to 500 MB. PUT the file there with uploadHeaders, then call build.create with the buildId. | | `qawolf codeHostIntegration find` | read | List the workspace's code host integrations (GitHub or GitLab). A connected integration lets QA Wolf read repositories and receive the code host's webhooks. codeHostIntegration.listRepositories pages the repositories each integration covers. | | `qawolf codeHostIntegration listRepositories` | read | List the repositories the workspace's code host integrations cover, alphabetical by full name. The list reflects the last sync from the code host; codeHostIntegration.find lists the integrations themselves. | | `qawolf deployment find` | read | List the deployments QA Wolf has received for the workspace, newest first. A deployment arrives through a code host integration's webhook or through deployment.reportStatus, and is what a deployment trigger evaluates against. deployment.listTriggerEvaluations reports each trigger's verdict for one deployment. | | `qawolf deployment listTriggerEvaluations` | read | List the per-trigger verdicts recorded when a deployment was evaluated against the workspace's triggers. Each verdict says whether the trigger matched, did not match with the reason per condition, or was never considered and why. Verdicts are a snapshot from evaluation time: editing or deleting a trigger later does not change them. | | `qawolf deployment reportStatus` | write | Report a deployment lifecycle status. A deployment's first success report evaluates global triggers asynchronously, and it is the only report that does: a trigger added or unpaused later does not make an already reported deployment evaluate again. Report that deployment under a new providerDeploymentId to evaluate it against the current triggers. The response contains the deployment only, not the resulting runs. | | `qawolf doctor` | local | Diagnose problems running flows locally | | `qawolf email find` | read | List the workspace's inbox, or its sent mail, newest first. Read a message body with email.get. | | `qawolf email get` | read | Read one email of the workspace, with its plain text and HTML bodies. Use it to pull a sign-in code or a verification link out of a message. | | `qawolf email getAttachment` | read | Read one attachment of a workspace email as base64 content, by file name or by position. email.get lists both. | | `qawolf email listAddresses` | read | List the workspace's inbox addresses, alphabetical. A flow can sign up with a plus-suffixed form of any of them, and email.find reads what arrives. | | `qawolf email registerAddress` | write | Register an inbox address for the workspace. Registering an address the workspace already has changes nothing. A refusal names the domains the workspace can use. | | `qawolf email send` | write | Send an email from one of the workspace's inbox addresses, for example to exercise a flow that reacts to incoming mail. Returns the sent email; read it back with email.get. | | `qawolf environment create` | write | Create an environment on the caller's team and return it in the environment.get shape. This can also create a branch on the team's connected Git provider. | | `qawolf environment deleteVariable` | write | Remove one environment variable by name. Succeeds whether or not the variable existed. | | `qawolf environment find` | read | List the team's environments, newest first. | | `qawolf environment get` | read | Read a single environment's name, kind, release readiness status, flow-code branch and reconciliation state, run concurrency limit, and termination state. If flowCodeBranch exists, use its syncStatus for Git reconciliation and read lastSyncedCommitHash only when syncStatus is reconciled. | | `qawolf environment getVariable` | read | Read the values of named environment variables in one call. Values are secrets. Names that do not exist go to missingNames and write-only secrets go to secretNames; neither fails the call. | | `qawolf environment listVariableNames` | read | Use this to answer which QA Wolf environment variables are available to test code. Returns names only; values never leave the server. | | `qawolf environment promote` | write | Declare a preview environment's work accepted, typically when its pull request merges: its flow changes are promoted into its base environment and the environment is terminated once they land. Returns the promotion in pending; poll promotion.get to learn how it settled. Calling again while a promotion is open returns that promotion. A conflict settles the promotion conflicted and cancels the environment's in-progress runs; promotion.get names the conflicting paths. Use environment.terminate instead when the work is abandoned. | | `qawolf environment setVariable` | write | Create or replace an environment variable. If the user asks to create one for "my email" without naming it, use DEFAULT_EMAIL. The value is never returned. | | `qawolf environment terminate` | write | Terminate a preview environment, typically when its pull request closes without merging: its flow changes are not promoted into its base. Returns the environment, now terminated. A terminated environment cannot be terminated again. Use environment.promote instead when the work is accepted. | | `qawolf environment update` | write | Update an environment owned by the caller's team and return it in the environment.get shape. Omitted fields remain unchanged. | | `qawolf file requestDownload` | read | Get a URL for reading a file out of the caller's team storage. Answers 404 when nothing is stored at that path. | | `qawolf file requestUpload` | write | Get a URL to put a file into team storage: a spreadsheet of journeys, anything too large to paste. PUT with the returned contentType, then name the returned filePath in filePaths. | | `qawolf flow addTag` | write | Assign an existing tag to the selected flows. Create tags with tag.create. Flows that already carry the tag are reported in skippedFlows. | | `qawolf flow getHistory` | read | List one flow's results across runs in an environment, newest first, with status, attempts, duration, and diagnosis. Use it to spot flakiness, failure streaks, and duration trends. | | `qawolf flow removeTag` | write | Remove a tag from the selected flows. Succeeds whether or not each flow carried the tag; the flows that did not are reported in skippedFlows. | | `qawolf flow update` | write | Move a flow between draft and active readiness. The other statuses shown in the app are derived and cannot be set. | | `qawolf flows list` | local (read with --remote) | List flows matching [pattern] from the local project, or from a QA Wolf environment with --remote | | `qawolf flows pull` | read | Download an environment's flows into the local .qawolf/<env>/ cache | | `qawolf flows run` | local (read with --env) | Run flows matching [pattern], or every flow when omitted; with --env, pull missing flows from that QA Wolf environment | | `qawolf init` | local | Scaffold a QA Wolf project in the current directory | | `qawolf install` | local | Install every runtime dependency the project's flows need | | `qawolf install android` | local | Install Android system images, AVDs, and the Appium driver used by the project's Android flows | | `qawolf install browsers` | local | Install Playwright browsers used by the project's web flows | | `qawolf install clear` | local | Remove the managed runtime cache (all installed runtime versions) | | `qawolf investigation get` | read | Read what the QA Wolf AI investigating a run has concluded: one finding per cause of its failures, with the question waiting for a person and any answer or dispute the investigation hasn't acted on yet. A run that automatic investigation does not cover answers status "not-enabled". | | `qawolf investigation question find` | read | List the questions the QA Wolf AI investigating failed runs is waiting for a person to answer, across a workspace's runs. Each question names its run, flows, details and offered answers. To answer one, send the person's answer to its sessionId with agent.send. | | `qawolf issue addFlows` | write | Add flows to a coverage request owned by the caller's team. Flows already covered stay covered. Bug reports and blockers link to flows through the runs that reproduce them; use run.diagnose to record one. | | `qawolf issue attachFiles` | write | Attach files from the team's storage to a bug report owned by the caller's team, for example the files a bug was reproduced with. Files already attached stay attached. Upload a file with file.requestUpload first. | | `qawolf issue create` | write | Create a bug report, blocker (issue type `maintenance`), or coverage request issue for the caller's team. A user can create a blocker only when they can see the workspace's blockers; a team or organization API key credits it to the workspace's automation user. Link its failed flows afterwards with run.diagnose. | | `qawolf issue decideSuggestion` | write | Decide a coverage request or bug report that QA Wolf suggested after exploring an environment. Add turns on the suggested flow in the environment. Report files a potential bug. Skip declines the suggestion. Undo takes back a decision before the flow joins. The issue's status follows the decision, so change the status only through this tool while the suggestion is undecided. | | `qawolf issue find` | read | List the team's bug reports, blockers, or coverage requests, newest first. | | `qawolf issue get` | read | Get an issue by id. | | `qawolf issue listActivity` | read | List an issue's activity, oldest first: creation, status and priority changes, and the flows that started or stopped reproducing it. Use it to measure time to fix or to find issues that came back. | | `qawolf issue removeFlows` | write | Remove flows from a coverage request or remove bug report or blocker reproductions in an environment. Unlinked flows are left alone. Reports auto-close when no active reproductions remain and auto-close is enabled. For reports, omit environmentId only when each selected flow is linked in at most one environment. | | `qawolf issue update` | write | Update an issue owned by the caller's team. Omitted fields remain unchanged. | | `qawolf legacyTrigger find` | read | List a workspace's legacy per-environment triggers; trigger.find lists the current ones. For migration only; it goes when legacy triggers go. adaptiveFlowSelection becomes a generativeSuite action, which takes no tags. | | `qawolf legacyTrigger pause` | write | Pause one legacy trigger, the older per-environment kind, so it stops firing; use trigger.pause for a current one. Its copies in pull request environments pause too. For migration only; it goes when legacy triggers go. | | `qawolf legacyTrigger resume` | write | Resume one legacy trigger, the older per-environment kind; use trigger.resume for a current one. Its copies in pull request environments resume too, and a scheduled one jumps to the next upcoming slot even if it was not paused. For migration only; it goes when legacy triggers go. | | `qawolf mcpServer connect` | write | Start connecting an MCP server from the workspace's catalog, such as Linear, so Tester can use its tools. Returns a sign-in link to show the user. | | `qawolf promotion find` | read | List environment promotions, newest first. A promotion moves the flow changes made in a head environment into its base environment. Filter by status conflicted to find the promotions whose conflicts still need a resolution. | | `qawolf promotion get` | read | Read one environment promotion: its status, the conflicting paths and commit hashes while it is conflicted or resolving, the commit it landed when promoted, and the AI task resolving it. Poll it after environment.promote to learn how the promotion settled. It does not serve file contents; a resolver reads both branches from the flow code repository. | | `qawolf promotion resolve` | write | Submit the resolution of a conflicted promotion: the full resolved contents of every conflicting path to keep, and every conflicting path to delete. Together they must cover exactly the paths in the promotion's conflict, and both commit hashes must match the conflict's; if a branch moved since, the call is refused as stale-conflict and promotion.get has the current conflict. Returns the promotion in resolving; poll promotion.get until it is promoted, or conflicted again if the branches moved while it applied. | | `qawolf run acceptScreenshotBaseline` | write | Make the new screenshot of a failed screenshot comparison the baseline, so later runs compare with it. Use it only when the difference is an intended change of the app, not a bug, noise, or a page that was not ready. Every later run of every environment of the workspace compares with the new baseline. Refuses without changing anything when the baseline changed since the run. | | `qawolf run create` | write | Create a run for the selected flows and/or tags in an environment. | | `qawolf run diagnose` | write | Link failed flows in a run to an existing bug report or blocker owned by the caller's team, recording them as its reproductions. It does not explain why a run failed; read investigation.get or attempt.get for that. The issue's type selects the diagnosis. Each flow must have failed in the run. A flow that is already diagnosed in the run moves to this issue, and may stay linked to other open reports. The diagnosis appears on the run, and the reproduction appears under the issue's reproductions. Coverage requests cannot be diagnosed; use issue.addFlows to cover flows instead. | | `qawolf run find` | read | List an environment's recent runs, newest first, including failed-attempt discovery metadata. | | `qawolf run get` | read | Get a run's status, per-flow results, links, and how many of its bugs are blocking. | | `qawolf run listScreenshotComparisons` | read | List the screenshot comparisons that failed a run's flows, with the expected, actual and diff images of each. Only comparisons that caused a failure are listed: a screenshot that differs within tolerance, or that differs on a line that did not fail, is left out. Each comparison tells whether its baseline changed since the run and whether the baseline still passes in other environments. The image URLs expire after a few minutes; fetch the preview URLs to look at the images. The first call for an image makes its missing JPEG preview and keeps it in team storage, so later calls reuse it. | | `qawolf run optOutOfInvestigation` | write | Mark failed flows in a run as "do not investigate" (DNI): the failures need no bug report or blocker. Each flow must have failed in the run and still be under investigation. A flow that already has a diagnosis cannot be opted out. A team or organization key records the opt-out as the workspace's automation user. To link a failure to a report instead, use run.diagnose. | | `qawolf run reattempt` | write | Request new attempts for a run's flows. A flow is eligible once its result is failed or canceled and QA Wolf's automatic retries have finished. A flow that kept failing in later runs is attempted in the latest of them, because that is the run carrying the failure, so read reattemptedInRunIds for where each attempt landed. A fully investigated run no longer accepts reattempts. Attempts run with the flow code the environment has synced when the request arrives: after publishing a fix, pass afterCommit so the request waits for that commit instead of rerunning older code. Poll run.get for results, or pass aiTaskId or chatSessionId to be notified when they settle. | | `qawolf run restoreScreenshotBaseline` | write | Undo a screenshot baseline change that accepted a failed comparison of the run: put back the baseline it replaced, so later runs compare with the old baseline again. Use it when a person disputes a baseline the AI accepted. Refuses without changing anything when the baseline changed again since. | | `qawolf run stop` | write | Stop a run, including its queued flows and automatic retries. Stopping is asynchronous and can update run-status messages and commit statuses in connected integrations. Repeated requests are safe, and finished runs keep their results. A run that is still being created returns not found; retry once run.get returns the run. If run.get returns a different runId, use that ID. Poll run.get for results. | | `qawolf runner act` | write | Perform one raw action on a runner's screen. A browser runner takes click, double_click, scroll, move, drag, keypress, navigate and type; a mobile runner takes tap, swipe, fill and type. A browser runner answers mobile actions with action-not-supported-on-browser; a mobile runner answers the other browser actions with action-not-supported-on-mobile. Use - to read a whole action as JSON from stdin | | `qawolf runner actions` | write | Perform a sequence of up to ten raw actions on a runner's screen in one request, as a JSON array of the same actions `runner act` takes. Use - to read the array from stdin. Actions run back to back, so batch only steps whose targets are on the screen you last saw, and end the sequence at the step that changes the page. Each result carries an effect: performed, not-performed, or unknown when the runner stopped answering and the action may have landed | | `qawolf runner events` | read | Print a runner's journal, one entry per line. QA Wolf writes console, recorder, run-events, run-logs, run-status | | `qawolf runner exec` | write | Evaluate a snippet against a runner's live page. Use - to read the snippet from stdin | | `qawolf runner highlight-selector` | write | Highlight what a selector matches on a runner's live page, so the next screenshot shows it. Omit the selector to clear the highlight | | `qawolf runner import-package` | write | Install a package into a runner's live run, so a snippet or a selection can import it | | `qawolf runner inspect contexts` | read | List the WebView contexts available, and which is current | | `qawolf runner inspect element-html` | read | Print the HTML of the first element a selector matches | | `qawolf runner inspect elements` | read | Find elements at a screen point, carrying some text, or matching a selector | | `qawolf runner inspect page-html` | read | Print the page's HTML, simplified for a model to read | | `qawolf runner inspect page-source` | read | Print the current context's page source, as a tree | | `qawolf runner inspect session` | read | Print the Appium session's status: ready, or why not | | `qawolf runner inspect variable` | read | Print a top-level variable's value from the running workflow | | `qawolf runner keepalive` | read | Reset a runner's inactivity clock, for a caller that pauses between actions | | `qawolf runner launch` | write | Launch an interactive runner and make it this directory's default | | `qawolf runner list` | read | List the runners running on your team | | `qawolf runner list-recordings` | read | Read a page of published video recordings, including after the runner terminates. Platform URLs persist; video URLs expire | | `qawolf runner promote-snapshot` | write | Accept a run's screenshot as the new baseline for an image diff, on the runner that produced it | | `qawolf runner record auto` | write | Enable or disable automatic recording for subsequent full runs | | `qawolf runner record start` | write | Start manual video capture across runs. Requires a ready screen and suppresses automatic capture until stopped | | `qawolf runner record status` | read | Show the active recording and automatic recording setting | | `qawolf runner record stop` | write | Stop the recording with this UUID and publish it. Retrying cannot stop a later recording | | `qawolf runner run` | write | Run a flow on an interactive runner, shipping the flow and what it imports | | `qawolf runner screenshot` | read | Save a JPEG of an interactive runner's screen to a file, or write it to stdout with --out - | | `qawolf runner stop-run` | write | Stop what a runner is currently executing, leaving the runner up | | `qawolf runner terminate` | write | End an interactive runner, and the pod it runs on with it | | `qawolf skill get` | read | Read a QA Wolf skill: the instructions a coding agent follows for one kind of QA Wolf work. The reply carries the skill's SKILL.md and every file under its references directory, so nothing else has to be fetched for it. Read the skill before starting the work it covers and follow it. A link in the reply of the form ../<skill>/SKILL.md names another skill, which this call reads by that name. | | `qawolf skill list` | read | List the QA Wolf skills, each with its name and the description that says when to use it. A skill is the instructions a coding agent follows for one kind of QA Wolf work, such as onboarding an application, creating a flow, repairing a failing flow, or setting up triggers. Call this before any QA Wolf work, pick the skill whose description matches the request, and read it with skill.get. | | `qawolf tag create` | write | Create a tag on the caller's team. Tags select flows in run.create. | | `qawolf tag list` | read | List the team's tags, alphabetical by name. Tag names select flows in run.create. | | `qawolf trigger create` | write | Create a trigger. A schedule trigger runs a named set of flows on a cadence; a deployment trigger runs when a matching deployment is reported. | | `qawolf trigger delete` | write | Delete a trigger permanently. The runs it already created are kept. To stop a trigger without losing it, use trigger.pause. | | `qawolf trigger find` | read | List the team's triggers, newest first. | | `qawolf trigger get` | read | Get one trigger by id. | | `qawolf trigger pause` | write | Pause a trigger so it stops firing. Pausing is idempotent. A team whose triggers are all paused reports no trigger activity at all. |
