# Don't Die A macOS menu-bar app that keeps your Mac awake **only while AI coding agents are running**, then releases power-saving the moment they stop — so your battery isn't drained when nothing needs the machine awake. Built for the "kick off an agent, walk away, let it keep grinding" workflow. --- ## How it works ``` DontDie.app (SwiftUI MenuBarExtra, LSUIElement — no Dock icon) │ ├─ AgentMonitor polls the process table (libproc) for a configurable list of │ agent names: claude, codex, node, aider, python, ollama, cursor ├─ PowerController state machine, edge-triggered on agent count: │ • agents > 0 → ENGAGE (hold IOPMAssertion + tell helper: disablesleep 1) │ • agents == 0 → RELEASE (drop assertion + tell helper: disablesleep 0) ├─ BatteryMonitor AC vs battery + charge % (for the on-AC-only / low-batt policies) └─ HelperClient ──XPC──► com.dontdie.helper (root daemon via SMAppService) runs `pmset -a disablesleep 1|0`, then reads back the SleepDisabled flag and reports whether it actually stuck ``` **Why two layers?** A normal `IOPMAssertion` (what `caffeinate` uses) only stops *idle* sleep while the lid is open. To survive a **closed lid** you have to set the kernel `disablesleep` flag, which requires root — hence the privileged helper. **Battery efficiency:** when zero watched agents are running, the app holds no assertion and `disablesleep` is `0`. Nothing is kept awake unless an agent is actually working. There's also an optional low-battery floor so a forgotten agent can't fully drain the Mac. **Crash safety:** if the app disconnects or crashes, the helper's XPC `invalidationHandler` resets `disablesleep` to `0` — a crash can never leave your Mac unable to sleep. --- ## ⚠️ Honest caveat: lid-closed on Apple Silicon This is the hard truth the whole project is built around: - `pmset disablesleep` is the **only** software lever that can veto lid-closed sleep. `caffeinate`/`IOPMAssertion` cannot. - On **Apple Silicon** Macs (M-series), Apple's lid magnet can **force sleep on battery regardless of `disablesleep`**. This is hardware-level and contested — it works for some setups and not others. - So: this app applies the strongest available lever **and verifies the result**. The menu bar shows `VERIFIED` when the `SleepDisabled` flag actually took, or `UNVERIFIED` when the hardware overrode it. It tells you the truth instead of pretending. - Guaranteed-awake-with-lid-closed still only exists via Apple's official clamshell mode: external display + power + keyboard/mouse. --- ## Build ```sh xcodebuild -project DontDie.xcodeproj -scheme DontDie build CODE_SIGNING_ALLOWED=NO ``` Targets macOS 14+. Two targets build: the `DontDie` app and the `com.dontdie.helper` daemon (bundled into the app at `Contents/Library/LaunchDaemons`). > For a real install the app and helper must be code-signed with a consistent > identity (Developer ID or a local dev cert) — `SMAppService` refuses unsigned > daemons. The `CODE_SIGNING_ALLOWED=NO` flag above is for CI/compile checks only. ## Install & first run 1. Build/run the app — it appears in the menu bar (no Dock icon). 2. The first time it needs to keep the lid awake, it registers the helper via `SMAppService`. macOS will require a **one-time approval in System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions** before the daemon can run as root. 3. After approval, toggling is seamless forever. ## Verify it works (manual functional test) The live test needs the running app + approved root helper, so it can't run in CI: ```sh # 1. With no agents running, confirm the Mac is NOT being held awake: pmset -g | grep SleepDisabled # expect 0 pmset -g assertions | grep Prevent # expect no DontDie assertion # 2. Start a process that matches the watched list: cp "$(command -v sleep)" /tmp/claude && /tmp/claude 600 & # 3. Within one poll interval, confirm it engaged: pmset -g | grep SleepDisabled # expect 1 (menu bar shows ENGAGED/VERIFIED) # 4. Stop the fake agent and confirm it releases: kill %1 pmset -g | grep SleepDisabled # expect 0 (menu bar shows Idle) ``` ## Settings Edit in the menu bar's Settings: the watched process-name list, poll interval, on-AC-only / on-battery-only policy, and the low-battery auto-release floor. --- ## Project layout | Path | What | |------|------| | `DontDie/App/` | `DontDieApp`, `MenuBarView`, `SettingsView`, `AppViewModel` | | `DontDie/Core/` | `AgentMonitor`, `PowerController`, `AssertionManager`, `BatteryMonitor`, `SettingsStore`, `HelperClient` | | `Helper/` | `main`, `HelperTool` (XPC delegate), `PmsetRunner`, daemon plist + entitlements | | `Shared/` | `HelperProtocol` (XPC interface), `Constants` | | `Tests/` | `PowerControllerTests` (0→2→0 engage/release coverage) | --- ## Build status Built greenfield via a [yolorun](https://github.com/swarajbachu/yolorun) graph of dependency-ordered agent nodes: `bootstrap → power-core · helper · detection · ui → integrate → verify`. Both targets compile clean (`** BUILD SUCCEEDED **`). The live lid-close behavior must be confirmed on your own hardware per the honest caveat above.
