Release workflow — Vue SSR Starter Kit

Owns the release procedure: branch creation, version bump, CHANGELOG update, and commit/push/tag proposal. The release agent executes this workflow.

Hard constraints

1. Never auto-commit/push/tag. Always propose and wait for explicit user confirmation before executing any git write operation.
2. Commit format: [release/vX.Y.Z] release vX.Y.Z
3. Co-authored-by trailer on every commit: Co-authored-by: AI Assistant <[e-mail]> (tool-agnostic placeholder — forks may replace this identity)
4. Tag format: vX.Y.Z (prefixed with v)
5. Branch must be main or master to start a release. If on another branch, abort and inform the user.

Release procedure (step by step)

Step 1 — Verify branch

git branch --show-current

Must be main or master. If not, abort: "You must be on main/master to start a release."

Step 2 — Ensure clean working tree

git status --porcelain

If dirty, abort: "Working tree is not clean. Please commit or stash your changes first."

Step 3 — Ask bump type

Ask the user: patch, minor, or major.

Compute new version from current package.json version:

• patch: 3.0.2 → 3.0.3
• minor: 3.0.2 → 3.1.0
• major: 3.0.2 → 4.0.0

Step 4 — Create release branch

git checkout -b release/vX.Y.Z

Step 5 — Bump version in package.json

Edit package.json → update "version": "X.Y.Z".

Step 6 — Sync lockfile

npm install

This updates package-lock.json to match the new version.

Step 7 — Gather unreleased changes

If a ## [Unreleased] section already exists in CHANGELOG.md (maintained continuously — see "Continuous [Unreleased] update" below), use it as the primary source and only cross-check git log for anything missed. Otherwise gather from git log:

git log --oneline $(git describe --tags --abbrev=0)..HEAD

Parse commit messages. Group them into categories:

If commits don't follow conventional format, list them as bullet points and let the user categorize.

Step 8 — Present CHANGELOG draft

Show the user the formatted CHANGELOG section:

Ask the user to approve, edit, or provide corrections.

Step 9 — Write CHANGELOG

If a ## [Unreleased] section exists, rename its header to ## X.Y.Z (merging any additions from Steps 7–8). Otherwise insert the approved ## X.Y.Z section at the top of CHANGELOG.md, below # Changelog and any blank line, above the first existing ## X.Y.Z entry. Either way, leave no empty [Unreleased] section behind.

Step 10 — Propose commit

Present the exact command to the user:

• No date in header (project convention — dates are in older entries but dropped from v3.0.0+)
• An ## [Unreleased] section may sit at the very top between releases; it uses the same category structure and is converted to ## X.Y.Z at release time (Step 9)

Continuous [Unreleased] update (between releases)

Triggered by the Task completion protocol in CLAUDE.md (step 5), not by a release. The orchestrator does this inline and silently — no version bump, no commit, no tag, no user prompt.

When to add an entry (curated): the task produced a user-facing feature, bug fix, dependency change, or behavior/UI/i18n change. Skip pure reformatting, lockfile-only, .claude/ config, test-only, and internal-docs changes.

How:

1. Derive the entry from the diff of the just-completed task — what changed, and why it matters to a user of the kit. One bullet = one theme; ignore reformatting noise.
2. Ensure a ## [Unreleased] section exists at the top of CHANGELOG.md, directly under # Changelog. Create it if absent.
3. Place each bullet under the matching category: Package Updates, New Features, Improvements, Bug Fixes, Removed (Security if relevant). Create a category subsection only when needed.
4. Deduplicate and merge into existing [Unreleased] bullets under the same category — never add a second [Unreleased] section and never restate an existing bullet.

Constraints: never bump the package.json version, never git commit/tag, no dates. The section stays [Unreleased] until a release converts it (Step 9).

Edge cases

• No commits since last tag: Abort with "No unreleased changes found."
• No existing tags: Use first commit as baseline: git log --oneline --all
• User cancels at any step: Offer to delete the release branch: git checkout master && git branch -D release/vX.Y.Z
