Hm 126F Hazmat Training
All 'hazmat employees' must be trained. 49 CFR 172.700-704. Initial within 90 days, recurring every 3 years.
Who's a hazmat employee
Anyone who: directly affects hazmat transport safety. Loads, unloads, handles, packages hazmat. Drives hazmat. Prepares hazmat papers. Designs/manufactures hazmat packaging. Operates a vehicle used to transport hazmat. Inspects.
Four required elements
- General awareness/familiarization. 2) Function-specific (their actual job). 3) Safety. 4) Security awareness (post-Sept-11 addition).
Initial timing
Within 90 days of hire/role change. Cannot independently perform hazmat function without supervision until training complete.
Recurring
Every 3 years. Retest each element.
Recordkeeping
Records kept for duration of employment + 90 days after termination. Records include: employee name, training date, training description, trainer's name + signature, employee acknowledgment.
Approved training methods
Classroom, online (e.g., JJ Keller, NLA), in-house with qualified trainer. PHMSA-published Hazardous Materials Compliance Reference + ERG.
Documentation in DQF
HM-126F training certificate in each driver's DQF. Renewal tracked. Auditors verify this every time.
