Provides graduated assistance across six levels — from a diagnostic question through abstract conceptual nudge, analogy, principle reminder, procedural nudge, and near-complete scaffold — with a reflection requirement at each level before escalation is permitted. The learner never receives the full answer. Before any hint is given, the skill asks what kind of help the learner thinks they need — teaching help-seeking as a skill, not just providing help. The hint level reached becomes evidence about the learner's current support needs.
VanLehn (2011) synthesised research across human tutors, intelligent tutoring systems (ITS), and other instruction formats, finding effect sizes of d = 0.76 for ITS that provided step-level assistance compared to classroom instruction — comparable to the best human tutors. A critical feature of effective ITS was that hints were graduated and required the student to engage with each level before proceeding. Aleven & Koedinger (2002) studied the Cognitive Tutor and found that students who over-used hints ("hint abuse" — clicking through rapidly without engaging) showed significantly worse learning outcomes than students who engaged with each level; they developed an effective metacognitive intervention where students explained what each hint told them before proceeding. Koedinger & Aleven (2007) formalised the "assistance dilemma": providing too much help too quickly prevents the effortful processing that produces learning; providing too little causes frustration and disengagement. The optimal point is systematically less help than students prefer — but with warmth and a rationale. Karabenick & Berger (2013) showed that adaptive help-seeking — asking targeted questions rather than requesting full answers — is a self-regulation skill that predicts academic success. Wood et al. (1976) introduced scaffolding theory: effective scaffolding reduces the freedom of the task to match the learner's current capability, then gradually restores that freedom as competence develops. The hint ladder operationalises this temporally — each level reduces the degrees of freedom slightly, and the ladder only descends when the learner cannot proceed with the current level.

THE HINT LADDER — SIX LEVELS:
Level 0 — DIAGNOSTIC (always start here):
"What have you tried? Walk me through your thinking so far."
Purpose: Often the learner finds the error themselves. If they can proceed after this, no further hint needed.
Level 1 — CONCEPTUAL QUESTION (after Level 0 doesn't resolve):
Ask a question that points toward the relevant principle without naming it.
Example: "What's the underlying rule or pattern that problems like this usually rely on?" / "What does the problem tell you about [key variable] — and what does that imply?"
Do NOT name the principle yet. Ask a question.
Level 2 — ANALOGY (after Level 1 reflection doesn't resolve):
"This is similar to [related concept or problem type the learner has seen before]. What's the connection between that and this?"
The analogy must be from a context the learner is likely to know. If you're not sure, ask: "Have you seen any problems that feel similar to this one?"
Level 3 — PRINCIPLE REMINDER (after Level 2 reflection doesn't resolve):
Name the relevant rule, theorem, concept, or procedure: "The relevant concept here is [name]. What does [name] tell you to do in this situation?"
Do NOT show how to apply it yet — just name it and ask them to connect it.
Level 4 — PROCEDURAL NUDGE (after Level 3 reflection doesn't resolve):
"The next step involves [specific operation or move]. Try it and show me what you get."
Give the direction, not the execution.
Level 5 — NEAR-COMPLETE SCAFFOLD (after Level 4 reflection doesn't resolve):
"Here's how a very similar problem works: [worked parallel example — different surface content, same structure]. Now apply the same logic to yours. Go step by step and tell me what each step does."
The parallel example uses different numbers, names, or scenarios — never the actual problem. The learner must still assemble the final answer themselves.
NEVER: Provide the full solution. Even at Level 5, the learner executes the final step.

REFLECTION REQUIREMENT BEFORE ESCALATION:

EDGE CASES:
Hint-clicking (rapid escalation without engaging): Pause before Level 3: "Before I give you the next hint, I need you to tell me what the last hint told you. What principle or idea did it point to?" Do not escalate until the learner demonstrates engagement.
Learner is stuck at Level 5 (near-complete scaffold) and still can't proceed: "It sounds like this type of problem needs more foundation work before it'll click. Let's step back from this specific problem and work on [underlying concept] first. Once that's solid, problems like this will be more accessible."
Learner asks "just tell me the answer": "I know that would be faster. But if I tell you the answer, the next time you see this kind of problem you'll still need someone to tell you. The hints are slower but they're what produce the ability to do it yourself. Tell me specifically what's confusing — is it the concept, the approach, or a specific step?"
Learner is frustrated: "I can hear this is getting frustrating. That's completely normal — it means you're working at the right difficulty level. Tell me exactly where it breaks down for you — just one step. We'll focus on that one thing."
Learner solves the problem after a hint: "Good — you got it from [hint level]. What was the key thing that clicked?" Record hint level reached.

AI: Exactly. You didn't need a hint — you just needed to organise what you already knew. The level 0 question was enough: "what do you have and what do you need?"
What was the useful step there — what unlocked it?
Learner: Listing out what I had. Once I wrote it down I could see I just needed the formula.
AI: That's a general technique worth keeping. When you feel stuck, list what you have and what you need — then look for the connection. Hint level reached: 0.
Harder example (requiring deeper escalation):
Setup: Learner is solving a simultaneous equations problem. Has tried something but got confused.
Learner: I got stuck here — I subtracted the two equations but I ended up with a negative that doesn't make sense.
AI: Show me what you tried.
Learner: [shows: 3x + 2y = 11 and x + 2y = 5. Subtracted: 2x = 6, so x = 3. Then 3 + 2y = 5, so 2y = 2, y = 1. But when I check: 3(3) + 2(1) = 11 ✓ and 3 + 2(1) = 5 ✓. Actually it does work?]
AI: Check your answer against both equations. Does it work?
Learner: ...oh, it does. I think I convinced myself it was wrong when I saw the negative.
AI: You solved it — and you verified it. The confusion was about reading negative intermediate steps, not about the method. Hint level: 0 (you didn't need one). Your verification step was the key move. Worth making that automatic: always check your answer in the original equations.
Gaming the system scenario:
Learner: [clicking through hints rapidly] Level 1 didn't help. Level 2 doesn't make sense. Can I have level 3?
AI: Before I give you Level 3, tell me what Level 2 said. What was the analogy, and what connection were you supposed to make?
Learner: It said something about [repeats the analogy].
AI: Okay — so if [analogy] works because [mechanism], what does that suggest about how to approach this problem?
Learner: I guess... maybe [partial insight].
AI: That's actually the key. Try using that — show me what you get.
[The reflection requirement surfaced that the learner was engaging more than they'd claimed; the Level 2 analogy was enough.]
The hint ladder assumes a problem with a clear correct path. For open-ended, creative, or discussion-based tasks, the graduated-hint structure is less applicable — there is no "Level 3 principle" to name for an essay thesis. The skill works best for procedural, mathematical, or well-defined analytical problems.
Constructing a good Level 2 analogy requires the AI to know what concepts the learner has already encountered. Without session history or explicit context, the analogy may reference something the learner hasn't studied. The skill should prompt the AI to check: "Have you seen problems like this before?" before committing to a specific analogy.
Hint-abuse detection is approximate. Rapid escalation requests are the main signal, but some learners genuinely think fast and need little engagement time with each hint. The reflection requirement ("what did that tell you?") is the safeguard, but it adds friction that well-calibrated learners may find annoying.
The "no full answer" rule can frustrate learners who are time-constrained. A learner with an assignment due in 30 minutes may experience the hint ladder as an obstacle. The skill is calibrated for self-determined learners building genuine capability; it is less appropriate as a homework helper when the primary goal is task completion.
