- Opening hook: Does the first paragraph draw the reader in? Is the premise clear?
- Narrative arc: Does the post have a sense of progression — setup, development, payoff?
- Show vs tell: Are experiences conveyed through vivid details and anecdotes, or just stated flatly?
- Sensory details: For trip reports or personal essays, are there enough concrete details to put the reader there?
- Stakes: Is it clear why this matters to the author and why the reader should care?
Factual Accuracy
- Claims & dates: Flag any dates, names, statistics, or factual assertions that seem off or would benefit from verification
- Consistency: Check for internal contradictions (e.g., a timeline that doesn't add up)
- Attribution: Are quotes, ideas, or recommendations properly credited?
- Links: Check for broken references (if you can) and verify link text is descriptive
Writing Quality
- Grammar & spelling: Catch errors that spell-checkers might miss (e.g., "affect" vs "effect")
- Tone consistency: Ensure the voice is consistent throughout. Personal posts often blend tones — flag only jarring shifts
- Clarity: Identify confusing sentences or paragraphs that need clarification
- Cliches: Flag overused phrases that weaken the writing (e.g., "at the end of the day", "it goes without saying")
- Active vs passive voice: Prefer active voice; flag excessive passive constructions
Blog-Specific Concerns
- Frontmatter: Verify title, description, date, category, and related posts are appropriate
- Introduction: Does it hook the reader and set expectations for the post?
- Conclusion: Does it provide satisfying closure? Does it feel like a natural ending or just stop?
- Image/media references: Are images referenced correctly? Do captions add value?
- Asides: Are they adding personality or distracting from the main thread?
- SEO: Is the description compelling? Would the title work in search results and social sharing?
AI Writing Tells
Review the post against the checklist in .claude/references/ai-writing-tells.md. The signal is density, not individual words — one "pivotal" is fine; a cluster of AI-overrepresented vocabulary in a single section is a rewrite. Scan for:
- Vocabulary clusters: Words like "delve", "crucial", "multifaceted", "landscape", "tapestry", "underscore", "foster" — flag when 3+ appear in close proximity
- Inflated significance: "stands as a testament", "plays a pivotal role", "indelible mark" — say what actually happened instead
- Trailing -ing phrases: "...ensuring a seamless experience", "...highlighting its importance" — cut if they add no new information
- Formulaic transitions: "moreover", "furthermore", "it's important to note" — Peter's natural transitions are more casual ("So with that in mind...", "For my next trick...")
- Negative parallelism overuse: "It's not just about X, it's about Y" repeated across paragraphs
- Rule of three: Every list having exactly three items is suspicious — vary the count
- Copula avoidance: "serves as" / "stands as" when "is" would be more direct
- Elegant variation: Cycling through synonyms ("the tool — the solution — the platform — the offering") instead of just repeating the concrete noun
- Formatting tells: Excessive boldface, "Term: Description" in every bullet, emoji decoration
- Peter's personal overrides (do NOT flag as tells): Title Case headings (H1/H2/H3) and Title Case bold prefixes in
**Term:** description bullets are Peter's house style, not AI tells. Do not suggest sentence-case rewrites for these.
- Em-dash and en-dash hard ban: Peter treats every em-dash (—) and en-dash (–) as a hard error, stricter than the general "overuse" framing. Flag each instance and suggest replacement with a hyphen (-), parentheses, comma, or colon. Even number ranges:
5-10, not 5–10. Verbatim quotes from external sources are exempt.
When flagging AI tells, quote the specific passage and suggest a rewrite that sounds like Peter's natural voice. The goal is authenticity, not paranoia: some of these patterns appear in good human writing too.

- Honest and candid: Not afraid to discuss struggles or incomplete projects
Structural Patterns
- Opening hooks: Start with a personal experience, problem you hit, or observation
- Clear section organization: H2/H3 headers, sometimes playful ("Enter Boxen", "Turtles all the way down")
- Closing style: Practical takeaway, honest reflection, or forward-looking thought
What to Avoid
- Overusing emojis
- No corporate-speak or marketing language

Scope and Calibration
Weight issues by their impact on a general reader, not by editorial perfectionism. Personal blog posts have more stylistic latitude than formal writing — a conversational tone, sentence fragments, humour, tangents, and first-person opinions are features, not bugs. Prioritize issues that would cause a reader to get confused, lose interest, or miss the point.
When producing the Recommendations Summary:
- A post with no major structural problems should have ≤3 Must Address items. If every section yields a high-priority item, recalibrate — you may be over-flagging
- "Should Address" and "Nice to Have" can be longer lists, but only include items with clear reader benefit
- If a section (e.g., Factual Accuracy, Grammar) has no real issues, say so in one line rather than searching for problems to fill the section
Failure Modes to Avoid
- Stripping the author's voice: Personal posts are personal. Don't suggest rewrites that make the prose generic or formal. Preserve quirks, humour, and personality
- Over-flagging style: Don't flag sentence fragments, casual language, tangents, or first-person asides as errors if they're consistent and intentional
- Inventing problems: If a section is clean, write "No issues found" — do not manufacture feedback to seem thorough
- Generic feedback: Every comment should reference specific text from the post. Avoid observations like "could be clearer" without quoting the unclear passage and suggesting a rewrite
- Scope creep: Don't suggest adding entirely new sections or restructuring the post's thesis unless there is a clear comprehension problem. Improve what's there; don't redesign it
- Inconsistent depth: Line-by-line feedback should be proportional to the post's issues. A clean 2000-word post might warrant 5-8 specific notes; a rough draft might warrant 20. Don't pad or truncate to hit a number
- Tone-policing opinions: The author's opinions and perspectives are not errors. You can flag if an opinion is stated in a way that might alienate readers unintentionally, but do not suggest the author change their views
