| version | 1.0.0-alpha.6 |
Utility-first styling for Flutter UI. Translate Tailwind-like classes to Flutter render tree semantics via className string parsing.
WDiv (not Container), WText (not Text), WButton (not ElevatedButton/GestureDetector).className string. Never inline BoxDecoration, TextStyle, or EdgeInsets when a Wind equivalent exists.bg-, text-, and border- class MUST have a dark: counterpart.Flutter constraint resolution differs fundamentally from CSS. Wind UI maps className syntax to native Flutter semantics. Follow these rules to avoid overflows and unbounded height errors.
Space-filling
| Goal | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fill remaining space in Row/Column | flex-1 | Maps to Expanded, negotiates available space |
| Full width in Column context | w-full | SizedBox(width: double.infinity), works here |
| Full width in Row context | flex-1 (NOT w-full!) | w-full causes RenderFlex overflow in Rows |
flex-none / shrink-0 | No flex shrink. Unlike CSS, Flutter Row/Column children do not auto-shrink; use flex-1 to allow growth | Row child stays fixed width |
Scrollable layouts
| Goal | className | Required context |
|---|---|---|
| Vertical scroll | overflow-y-auto + scrollPrimary: true | Parent MUST have bounded height |
| Bounded height for scroll | flex-1 on the scrollable WDiv | Inside a Column/Flex parent |
| Horizontal scroll | overflow-x-auto | Same rules |
| Flex children inside scrollable main axis | flex-1 on child works (Wind skips Expanded automatically when parent scrolls that axis) | flex flex-row + overflow-x-auto or flex flex-col + overflow-y-auto — no unbounded-constraints assertion |
WDiv Composition Rules
| className contains | Flutter widget | Notes |
|---|---|---|
flex flex-col | Column | flex alone defaults to Row |
flex flex-row or flex | Row | Direction default |
flex-row-reverse / flex-col-reverse | Row/Column with flipped main axis | Uses textDirection / verticalDirection so justify-start mirrors (matches CSS) |
order-{0..12} / order-first / order-last / order-[n] | Child reorder inside flex parent | Parent stable-sorts; children without order-* default to 0 |
wrap or grid | Wrap | NOT flex-wrap (no-op!) |
overflow-y-auto | SingleChildScrollView | Needs bounded height |
relative | Stack(clipBehavior: Clip.none) | Children split: normal layout + Positioned |
absolute top-4 right-4 | Positioned(top: 16, right: 16) | Must be inside a relative parent |
absolute inset-0 | Positioned(top: 0, right: 0, bottom: 0, left: 0) | Full overlay pattern |
hidden | SizedBox.shrink() |
Critical Layout Gotchas:
// ❌ WRONG: overflow in Row
WDiv(
className: 'flex flex-row',
children: [
WDiv(className: 'w-full', child: WText('Long text')), // OVERFLOW
],
)
// ✅ CORRECT
WDiv(
className: 'flex flex-row',
children: [
WDiv(className: 'flex-1', child: WText('Long text')), // Fills remaining space
],
)
// ❌ WRONG: unbounded height scroll
Column(
children: [
WDiv(className: 'overflow-y-auto', children: [...]) // ERROR: infinite height
],
)
// ✅ CORRECT
WDiv(
className: 'flex flex-col h-full', // Bounded
children: [
WDiv(
className: 'flex-1 overflow-y-auto',
scrollPrimary: true, // iOS tap-to-top
children: [...],
),
],
)
// ❌ WRONG: truncate without bounded width
WDiv(
className: 'flex flex-row',
children: [
WText('Very long title', className: 'truncate'), // OVERFLOW
],
)
// ✅ CORRECT
WDiv(
className: 'flex flex-row',
children: [
WDiv(
className: 'flex-1', // Bounds the text
child: WText('Very long title', className: 'truncate'),
),
],
)
// ❌ WRONG: absolute without relative parent
WDiv(
className: 'flex flex-row',
children: [
WDiv(className: 'absolute top-0 right-0', child: badge), // No Stack!
],
)
// ✅ CORRECT: relative parent creates Stack
WDiv(
className: 'relative flex flex-row',
children: [
WDiv(className: 'flex-1', child: content),
WDiv(className: 'absolute top-0 right-0', child: badge), // Positioned overlay
],
)
Note: h-full inside a scrollable parent results in an infinite height error. Use min-h-screen instead. Native Flutter widgets (e.g., ListView.builder, charts) inside a Row or Column MUST be wrapped in Expanded() (allowed exception to Gate 1 for non-Wind widget bounding). absolute children only work inside a relative parent. Only WDiv and WText are detected as absolute; wrap other widgets in a WDiv.
| Widget | Required Props | Key Optional Props | Use For |
|---|---|---|---|

WInput | value, onChanged | type, placeholder, className, placeholderClassName | Standalone inputs |
WSelect | options, value/values, onChange | searchable, isMulti, onCreateOption, className | Dropdowns |
WCheckbox | value, onChanged | className | Toggle checkboxes |
WIcon | icon | className | Icons with styling |
WImage | src | className | Images with object-fit |
WSvg | src | className, preserve-colors | SVG with fill/stroke/preserve |
WPopover | triggerBuilder, contentBuilder | alignment, className | Dropdowns, menus, tooltips |

WFormCheckbox | (FormField) | label, className | MagicForm-integrated checkbox |
WDatePicker | mode, onDateSelected/onRangeSelected | className, initialDate, firstDate, lastDate | Single date or date range picker |
WFormDatePicker | (FormField) | mode, className, firstDate, lastDate | MagicForm-integrated date picker |
WSpacer | - | className | Semantic spacing between siblings |
WDynamic | json | actions, controller, customIcons, builders, denyWidgets | Server-driven UI from JSON |
WBreakpoint | base (builder) | sm, md, lg, xl, xxl, custom | Render a fully different widget tree per breakpoint — escape hatch when className prefixes + hidden aren't enough |
Rules:
child and children are mutually exclusive on WDiv.WDiv auto-wraps in WAnchor if hover:, focus:, or active: is present in the className.WButton with isLoading: true activates loading: prefix classes and disables interaction.WSelect with isMulti: true must use values + onMultiChange instead of value + onChange.WSpacer is a const-friendly semantic spacer. Prefer over SizedBox or empty WDiv for gaps between siblings.WDatePicker mode: DatePickerMode.single or DatePickerMode.range. Range mode uses onRangeSelected callback.Spacing Formula: n × 4px (e.g., p-4 = 16px, gap-6 = 24px, m-2 = 8px)
Color Syntax: {role}-{color}-{shade} (e.g., bg-blue-500, text-gray-900, border-red-300)
bg-primary/50, text-gray-500/75bg-[#FF5733], w-[200px], text-[18px]Responsive: Prefix with breakpoint (e.g., md:flex-row, lg:p-6, xl:hidden)
sm (640px), md (768px), lg (1024px), xl (1280px), 2xl (1536px)Typography Sizes: xs (12), sm (14), base (16), lg (18), xl (20), 2xl (24), 3xl (30), 4xl (36)
Border Radius: rounded (4), rounded-md (6), rounded-lg (8), rounded-xl (12), rounded-2xl (16), rounded-full (9999)
Position Types: relative (renders Stack), absolute (renders Positioned inside a Stack)
Offsets (spacing scale): top-{n} right-{n} bottom-{n} left-{n} (e.g., top-4 = 16px)
Insets: inset-{n} (all sides), inset-x-{n} (left+right), inset-y-{n} (top+bottom)
Negative offsets: -top-{n}, -inset-{n} (prefix with -)
Arbitrary offsets: top-[24px], left-[24px] (px only; % is unsupported)
Note: fixed and sticky are not implemented. Absolute children must be inside a relative parent.

dark: | Dark mode (MANDATORY on all colors) | bg-white dark:bg-gray-800 |
hover: | Mouse hover (via WAnchor) | hover:bg-gray-100 |
focus: | Keyboard focus | focus:ring-2 focus:ring-primary |
disabled: | Widget disabled prop | disabled:opacity-50 |
loading: | WButton isLoading=true | loading:opacity-75 |
active: | Tap down / WAnchor active | active:scale-95 |
selected: | Custom via states Set | selected:bg-primary/10 |
error: | Form validation fail | error:border-red-500 |

Modifiers stack: dark:hover:bg-gray-700, md:dark:flex-row
Custom states via states param: states: isActive ? {'active'} : {}
states (CRITICAL)Wind widgets have a states: Set<String>? parameter for Dart-controlled conditional styling. ALWAYS use states + prefixed classes instead of Dart string interpolation in className.
The states param activates custom prefix classes in className. When a state name is in the set, all classes prefixed with that name become active.
Pattern: Define ALL visual variants in a single static className, use states to toggle between them.
// ✅ CORRECT: declarative state binding
WDiv(
className: 'border-2 border-gray-200 selected:border-blue-500 bg-white selected:bg-blue-50 rounded-lg p-4',
states: isSelected ? {'selected'} : {},
child: WText(
'Item',
className: 'text-gray-600 selected:text-blue-600 font-medium',
states: isSelected ? {'selected'} : {},
),
)
// ❌ WRONG: Dart string interpolation in className
WDiv(
className: '''
border-2 rounded-lg p-4
${isSelected ? 'border-blue-500 bg-blue-50' : 'border-gray-200 bg-white'}
''',
child: WText(
'Item',
className: '${isSelected ? "text-blue-600" : "text-gray-600"} font-medium',
),
)
Multiple custom states, combine in the Set:
WDiv(
className: '''
bg-white enabled:bg-blue-50 locked:bg-gray-100 locked:opacity-75
border border-gray-200 enabled:border-blue-500 locked:border-gray-300
p-4 rounded-lg
''',
states: {
if (isEnabled && !isLocked) 'enabled',
if (isLocked) 'locked',
},
child: WText(
title,
className: 'text-gray-500 enabled:text-primary locked:text-gray-400',
states: {
if (isEnabled && !isLocked) 'enabled',
if (isLocked) 'locked',
},
),
)
Navigation / Tab active state:
WButton(
onTap: () => onTabChanged(index),
states: isActive ? {'active'} : {},
className: '''
px-3 py-2.5 rounded-lg transition-colors
text-gray-600 dark:text-gray-400
hover:bg-gray-100 dark:hover:bg-gray-800
active:bg-primary/10 active:text-primary
''',
child: WText(label, className: 'text-sm font-medium'),
)
When string interpolation is acceptable:
className: 'grid grid-cols-$columns')className: 'flex ${isVertical ? "flex-col" : "flex-row"}')Rule of thumb: If you're choosing between two sets of styling classes based on a boolean → use states. If you're inserting a dynamic value (number, direction) → interpolation is fine.
Internalize these principles before writing any component or layout. Read references/design-culture.md for full iOS HIG, visual hierarchy theory, color system, and mobile patterns.
Mobile-first: Design for the smallest screen. Enhance upward with responsive prefixes (md:, lg:).
Visual hierarchy (3 levels): Primary (dark color, bold weight, one per section max), Secondary (grey, supporting text, dates), Tertiary (light grey, metadata, timestamps). Emphasize by de-emphasizing: soften competing elements instead of making the target louder. Use weight and color before increasing font size.
Button hierarchy: solid (primary) > outline (secondary) > text (tertiary). One solid button per visible section.
iOS navigation defaults:
| Pattern | When | Rules |
|---|---|---|
| Tab bar | Top-level sections (3-5 tabs) | Persist everywhere, never hide, never switch programmatically |
| Hierarchical push | Parent-detail drill-down | Back = previous title, keep tab bar visible |
| Modal sheet | Focused tasks | Present from bottom, explicit dismiss (Cancel/Done) |
Dark mode mandatory: every color class includes both modes. No exceptions. Contrast: 4.5:1 normal text, 3:1 large text (WCAG AA). Color never the sole signal for meaning. Spacing: more space between groups than within groups. Generous first, reduce until satisfied. Loading states: skeleton screens over spinners. Empty states are first impressions (illustration + title + CTA). Touch targets: 44pt minimum (iOS), 48dp (Android). See design-tokens.md for className minimums. Concentric shapes: inner_radius = parent_radius - padding. Nest rounded corners consistently.
WindThemeData is the Tailwind Config of Wind. All design tokens live here.
| Param | Type | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
colors | Map<String, MaterialColor> | Custom color palettes (10-shade: 50-950) |
fontFamilies | Map<String, String> | Custom font families (sans, mono) |
fontSizes | Map<String, double> | Font size scale overrides |
fontWeights | Map<String, FontWeight> | Font weight scale overrides |
borderRadius | Map<String, double> | Border radius scale overrides |
shadows | Map<String, List<BoxShadow>> | Shadow scale overrides |
baseSpacingUnit | double | Base multiplier (default 4.0, so p-4 = 16px) |
brightness | Brightness | Light or dark mode |
syncWithSystem | bool | Auto-follow system brightness |
Custom colors: provide full MaterialColor with shades 50-900 (+950 recommended). Use via bg-primary, text-primary-700, border-primary/50.
Dark mode control: Static: WindThemeData(brightness: Brightness.dark). System-aware (preferred): default syncWithSystem: true. Runtime toggle: context.windTheme.toggleTheme(). Reset to system: context.windTheme.resetToSystem().
Programmatic color access (CRITICAL): Never use Color() literals or hex values in Dart code. Use Wind helpers: wColor(context, 'primary'), wColor(context, 'primary', shade: 700), context.wColorExt('brand', shade: 600), context.windColors['primary'].
Context extensions: context.windIsDark, context.windColors, context.wIsMobile, context.wIsTablet, context.wActiveBreakpoint. Read references/theme-setup.md for complete setup guide, builder pattern, and Magic Framework integration.
Never build a page directly. Every task follows atomic design: components -> layouts -> pages.
lib/ for StatelessWidget/StatefulWidget. List all custom components with file paths. If a component covers 80%+ of what you need, reuse it.lib/widgets/ or lib/components/. Own className binding, own dark: support.Page file limit: 150 lines maximum without component extraction. FAILED if: page file contains inline widget trees that belong in separate components, any visual element is duplicated instead of extracted, existing components are rebuilt instead of reused.
Every line of Wind UI code must pass these 7 gates. Violating any gate is a build failure. Gate 1: Wind widgets only.
| Banned | Wind Equivalent |
|---|---|
Container, SizedBox, DecoratedBox | WDiv with className |
Text, RichText | WText with className |
ElevatedButton, TextButton, GestureDetector | WButton with className |
TextField | WFormInput with className |
Expanded | WDiv(className: 'flex-1') |
Padding | WDiv(className: 'p-4') |
Row | WDiv(className: 'flex flex-row') |
Column | WDiv(className: 'flex flex-col') |
Spacer | WDiv(className: 'flex-1') |
Exception: third-party library callbacks requiring native widgets. Mark with // native: required by {library}.
Gate 2: No hardcoded colors. No Color() literals, no hex values, no raw ARGB. Use className tokens or Wind helpers: wColor(), context.wColorExt(), context.windColors[].
Gate 3: Dark mode mandatory. Every bg-*, text-*, border-* class has a dark: pair. No exceptions.
Gate 4: Touch targets >= 44pt. Buttons with text: py-3 minimum. Icon buttons: p-3 minimum (12px padding + 24px icon = 48dp). See design-tokens.md Touch Target Rules for full table.
Gate 5: No conditional styling via string interpolation. Never use '${condition ? "classA" : "classB"}' to switch styling classes in className. Use states parameter with state-prefixed classes instead. Dynamic values (grid columns, layout direction) are allowed: 'grid grid-cols-$count'. See Section 5 for full states pattern, examples, and the exact rule of thumb.
Gate 6: Multi-line className formatting. When className exceeds 60 characters or has 3+ class groups, use triple-quote ''' with one group per line. Group order: layout/size -> color/bg -> dark: variants -> state prefixes (hover/active/disabled/custom).
Gate 7: Component reuse. Scan for inline widget trees that could be separate reusable components. Any visual element rebuilt that already exists in lib/? Replace with import. Page file over 150 lines? Extract components.
