Mandarin Rhyming for Classical Poetry
Modern Mandarin Pronunciation System
The Four Tones
1st Tone (ā): High and level
2nd Tone (á): Rising from middle to high
3rd Tone (ǎ): Falling then rising (dip)
4th Tone (à): Sharp fall from high to low
In regulated verse composition:
- Tones determine 平仄 patterns (1st & 2nd = 平, 3rd & 4th = 仄)
- Rhyming words must share the same final vowel sound + consonant pattern
- Tone marks can be different; only the vowel+consonant final must match

Identifying Rhyme Families
Method 1: Same Final Sound
Two characters rhyme if they share the same final vowel sound:
- 天 (tiān) + 年 (nián) = both end in "an" sound ✓
- 天 (tiān) + 名 (míng) = different finals ✗
Method 2: Checking Modern Pronunciation
- Write character's pinyin with tone marks
- Remove the tone mark
- Keep only the final vowel pattern
- Characters with identical finals rhyme
Example:
- 安 (ān) → final is "an"
- 山 (shān) → final is "an"
- Both rhyme! ✓
Perfect Rhyme Set for Peace Theme: -AN
The -an rhyme is ideal for peace poetry:
| Character | Pinyin | Meaning | Tone |
|---|
| 安 | ān | peace, safe | 1st |
| 山 | shān | mountain | 1st |
| 关 | guān | gate, close | 1st |
| 还 | huán | return, restore | 2nd |
| 间 | jiān | space, amid | 1st |
| 颜 | yán | face, appearance | 2nd |
| 年 | nián | year | 2nd |
| 天 | tiān | sky, heaven | 1st |
| 千 | qiān | thousand | 1st |
| 闲 | xián | idle, leisurely | 2nd |
| 殷 | yīn | deeply, ardent | 1st |
| 眼 | yǎn | eye | 3rd |
| 难 | nán | difficult | 2nd |
| 看 | kàn | look | 4th |
| 汉 | hàn | Han (people) | 4th |
| 乱 | luàn | chaos, disorder | 4th |
Note: All share final "an" sound despite different tones.

Tone Pairing Rules for Rhyming
For Line-Final Position (Most Important)
The rhyming character should follow the 平仄 requirement:
- If line ends with 平 tone rhyme: characters with 1st or 2nd tone
- If line ends with 仄 tone rhyme: characters with 3rd or 4th tone
For the -an rhyme:
- 1st/2nd tone characters: 安、天、山、关、还、年、闲、颜、难、乡
- 3rd/4th tone characters: 眼、看、汉、乱、管、唤、贬
Practical Rhyming Workflow
- Select rhyme: Choose -an for peace theme
- Pick rhyming characters for lines 2, 4, 6, 8
- Check tones match 平仄 patterns required
- Build lines with non-rhyming characters (lines 1, 3, 5, 7)
- Verify pronunciation using pinyin finals, not individual character sounds
Common Rhyming Errors to Avoid
❌ Using characters that "sound similar" but have different finals
- 天 (tiān, final: an) ≠ 真 (zhēn, final: en)
- These don't rhyme!
❌ Mixing tone requirements
- A line ending with 平 tone shouldn't have 仄 tone rhyme character
- Violates the regulated pattern
❌ Using modern colloquial pronunciation instead of standard pinyin
- Always use standard Mandarin pinyin
- Not dialectal variations
