Offer Negotiation Playbook
Comprehensive frameworks for negotiating job offers across company types: hedge funds, big tech, security firms, and startups.
When to Use
- Offer expected or received from any target company
- Preparing for final-round compensation discussions
- Benchmarking compensation across company types
Company Type Compensation Patterns
Hedge Funds (Two Sigma, Citadel, Bridgewater, DE Shaw)
- Base: $200-400K for senior security roles
- Bonus: 50-200% of base (performance + fund performance)
- Signing: Common, $25-75K typical
- Equity: Rare — replaced by co-investment opportunities or deferred comp
- Key tactic: Anchor on total comp, not base. Bonus is negotiable.
- Culture: Data-driven. Bring market data, not feelings.
Big Tech (Stripe, Anthropic, Google, etc.)
- Base: $180-300K
- RSU/Stock: 4-year vest, often $200-800K+ total
- Signing: $25-100K typical, especially to offset RSU cliff
- Bonus: 10-20% target, less negotiable
- Key tactic: Negotiate RSU grant size and vesting schedule. Year 1 cash (signing + base) vs long-term equity.
- Culture: Competing offers are currency. Multiple offers = leverage.
Security Firms (Wiz, CrowdStrike, Palo Alto)
- Base: $180-280K
- Equity: Pre-IPO can be massive (Wiz especially). Post-IPO is standard RSU.
- Signing: Variable, $20-50K
- Key tactic: For pre-IPO, negotiate share count + exercise window. Get preferred strike price in writing.
Startups (< 1000 employees)
- Base: $150-250K (lower)
- Equity: 0.01-0.5% common, 4-year vest with 1-year cliff
- Key tactic: Negotiate equity terms (exercise window, acceleration on M&A, vesting start date).
Negotiation Framework
Phase 1: Information Gathering
- Research company compensation on levels.fyi, Blind, Glassdoor
- Identify competing offer leverage (real or credible)
- Understand company's fiscal calendar (budget timing matters)
- Learn the hiring manager's authority level
Phase 2: Anchoring
- Never give a number first if possible
- If pressed: "I'm looking for something competitive with my other conversations, in the range of [X-Y]"
- Set anchor 10-20% above your target (they will negotiate down)
- For hedge funds: anchor on total comp including expected bonus
Phase 3: Counter-Offer
Template response to initial offer:
"I'm very excited about this role and the team. The base of [X] is within range, but I was hoping we could discuss [the equity/bonus/signing component] — given my [competing offers / specific value-add], I think [specific ask] would make this a clear yes."
Phase 4: Benefits Optimization
Often more flexible than comp:
- Start date — negotiate 2-4 week gap for transition
- PTO — extra week is common ask
- Remote/hybrid — flexibility has $ value
- Healthcare — critical with baby Emma arriving April 2026
- 401k match — immediate vesting vs cliff
- Education/conference budget — especially at tech companies
- Title — costs them nothing, affects your next negotiation
Derek-Specific Leverage Points
- Finalist at Bridgewater — "I reached the final round at a top hedge fund" = validation signal
- Round Table orchestration system — unique technical differentiator
- Active multi-company search — real competing interest creates urgency
- Security + AI intersection — rare combination, premium market
- Family timeline — healthcare coverage start date matters (Emma due 4/29)
Key Rules
- Never accept on the spot. "I'd like to take 24-48 hours to review the full package."
- Get everything in writing before accepting verbally.
- Negotiate via email when possible — creates paper trail, removes pressure.
- Be collaborative, not adversarial — "How can we make this work for both of us?"
- Know your walk-away number before the conversation starts.
