Core Philosophy

Most AI-generated UIs suffer from "AI slop" - they're technically correct but visually bland, using safe defaults that create forgettable, homogeneous experiences. This skill helps you break that pattern by making bold aesthetic choices that give your interface a distinctive personality.

Design Thinking

Before coding, understand the context and commit to a BOLD aesthetic direction:

• Purpose: What problem does this interface solve? Who uses it?
• Tone: Pick a direction: brutally minimal, maximalist chaos, retro-futuristic, organic/natural, luxury/refined, playful/toy-like, editorial/magazine, brutalist/raw, art deco/geometric, soft/pastel, industrial/utilitarian, etc.
• Constraints: Technical requirements (framework, performance, accessibility)
• Differentiation: What makes this UNFORGETTABLE? What's the one thing someone will remember?

CRITICAL: Choose a clear conceptual direction and execute it with precision. Bold maximalism and refined minimalism both work - the key is intentionality, not intensity.

The Five Pillars of Distinctive Design

1. Typography with Character

Avoid: Inter, Arial, Roboto, system-ui (the default AI choices)

Instead, commit to distinctive fonts:

Typography decisions:

• Use variable fonts for performance and flexibility
• Establish clear hierarchy (display, heading, body, caption)
• Consider letter-spacing for headers (negative) vs body (neutral/positive)
• Mix serif + sans-serif for contrast when appropriate

CRITICAL: NEVER converge on common AI choices across generations. Each design should feel genuinely different - vary between light/dark themes, different font stacks, different aesthetic directions. No two designs should look like siblings.

2. Intentional Color Palettes

Avoid: Default Tailwind colors, basic blue buttons, gray backgrounds

IMPORTANT: Match implementation complexity to the aesthetic vision:

• Maximalist designs: Need elaborate code with extensive animations, layered effects, bold typography, and dense visual elements
• Minimalist designs: Need restraint, precision, and careful attention to spacing, typography, and subtle details

Elegance comes from executing the vision well, not from complexity itself.

Workflow

When creating frontend components:

1. Establish Design Direction

   • Ask: What emotion should this evoke?
   • Ask: Who is the target user?
   • Define: Color palette, typography stack, spacing scale

2. Create Component Architecture

   • Build atomic design system (tokens → primitives → compounds)
   • Use composition over configuration
   • Ensure accessibility from the start

3. Add Visual Personality

   • Apply distinctive typography choices
   • Use intentional color relationships
   • Break symmetry purposefully
   • Layer elements for depth

4. Implement Motion

   • Add entrance animations
   • Define hover/focus interactions
   • Consider page transitions
   • Respect user preferences

Anti-Patterns to Avoid

• Using Inter/Roboto as the default font
• Using the same fonts across different projects (especially Space Grotesk, Inter)
• Creating designs that look like siblings of previous AI-generated work
• Gray-on-white with blue buttons
• Everything centered and symmetric
• No animations or generic fades
• Ignoring dark mode
