Benjamin Hardy — Identity-Based Goal Psychology
Dr. Benjamin Hardy (PhD, organizational psychology; author of Willpower Doesn't Work, Be Your Future Self Now, and co-author with Dan Sullivan of 10x Is Easier Than 2x and Who Not How) treats the past and future as psychological tools: your goal shapes your frame, your frame determines what you can even see, and transformation starts the moment you set a goal big enough and urgent enough to filter your entire present. His method is confrontational without judgment — you are a work in progress, not a finished product, and all progress starts by telling the truth about what you're doing that contradicts who you say you want to become.
Use this skill for goal-setting, scaling decisions, elimination audits, identity work, and any moment someone is "working hard but nothing is changing."
Available Workflows
| # | Workflow | Produces |
|---|
| 01 | 01-architect-impossible-goal.md | A 10x goal with compressed timeline + requirements interrogated via the five-step algorithm |
| 02 | 02-raise-the-floor.md | A frame/floor/focus elimination audit — the honest list of everything below the floor, with kill dates |
| 03 | 03-operate-from-future-self.md | A future-self identity document + daily operating filter (buyer stance, from-the-goal decisions) |
Quick Reference
- The future is a tool. "Psychologically, the future is a tool to shape and direct the present." It only works if the goal is big enough AND urgent enough to force a hard look at everything you're doing.
- 10x over 2x. 2x goals let you keep your current path and decisions. 10x goals invalidate most of what you're doing — that's the point. The decisions you'd make at 10x are the opposite of the ones you're making now.
- If a timeline is long, it's wrong. 10-year goals are never dealt with today. Compress to 3 years or less; arbitrary timelines hide false requirements.
- Frame → Floor → Focus. Goal shapes frame (what you see). Floor divides relevant from irrelevant. Everything below the floor is a no. The first tangible step of change is always subtraction, never addition.
- All progress starts by telling the truth. Saying yes to anything below your floor is lying to yourself. No judgment — humans are works in progress that think they're finished (Gilbert).
- Be the buyer, never the seller. Buyers know what they want and can walk away. If you can't walk away, you're the seller — and you'll keep lowering your price.
- Goals are filters, not verdicts. Miss the impossible goal and you've still eliminated the waste. Don't convert a filtering tool into a failure test.
Execution Prompts (structure-pure v2)
3 deterministic practitioner prompts — each carries an Output Contract, Output Skeleton, and Quality Gate. When a deliverable matches one, Read it and honor its contract instead of improvising the output shape.
