Packy McCormick — Online Writing Mastery (Not Boring)
Packy McCormick built Not Boring from a Write of Passage assignment to 150K+ subscribers and a venture fund by writing weekly 5,000-10,000 word essays that make complex tech and business "not boring" — the standing goal is that every deep dive becomes the best piece ever written about its subject ("finally my mom understands what I do"). His method is intentionally messy on the surface (six discarded drafts, 4:30 AM rewrites) but rests on precise machinery: alpha content over beta content, an introduction that sets the ski line for the whole piece, obsessive primary-source research that strikes gold, and a voice counter-positioned against the incumbents he could never out-serious.

Quick Reference
- Beta vs alpha: "AI will change the world" is beta content — everyone writes it, nobody gets smarter. Alpha = the piece nobody else can or will write. If a reader won't get smarter, don't write it.
- The ski run: spend most of your writing time on the introduction. Figure out your line down the mountain; once the framing is set, every section falls into place.
- The maze restart: never edit a bad draft in place. Keep a V0 dump doc, then start completely fresh — each restart, you understand the piece better and pick a truer path.
- Marble, not statue: capture the excitement draft while you're still excited. "I'm not trying to make a statue, I just need marble."
- Just dumb enough: the writer's job is to figure the thing out alongside (or just before) the audience. Too much expertise kills the explanation.
- Strike gold: two days of obsessive primary-source digging (the leaked memo, the assembled spreadsheet) beats ten days of synthesis. Readers love an uncovered gem.
- Respect via hyperlink: treat readers as smart and curious; embed context in links instead of explaining. Attract the right readers, repel the wrong ones.
- Name the unnamed: virality = putting into words a thing everyone has noticed but nobody has named, plus something they can go do about it.
- Surrender to who you are: you can lie to yourself for piece 3, not for piece 200. A voice you can't physically sustain weekly is the wrong voice.
Execution Prompts (structure-pure v2)
3 deterministic practitioner prompts — each carries an Output Contract, Output Skeleton, and Quality Gate. When a deliverable matches one, Read it and honor its contract instead of improvising the output shape.
