Essential Terminology
Boat Parts
- Bow: Front of the boat
- Stern: Back of the boat
- Port: Left side (when facing the bow) - remember: Port and Left both have 4 letters
- Starboard: Right side (when facing the bow)
- Hull: Main body of the boat
- Keel: Heavy fin under the hull (prevents capsizing, provides lateral resistance)
- Centerboard/Daggerboard: Retractable version of a keel (on small boats)
- Rudder: Movable fin at the stern that steers the boat
- Tiller: Handle connected to the rudder (push left to go right) - on small boats
- Helm/Wheel: Steering wheel on larger boats (turn left to go left)
- Mast: Vertical pole that supports the sails
- Boom: Horizontal pole at the bottom of the mainsail (DANGER: can swing across in a jibe)
- Cockpit: Area where helmsperson and crew sit
- Deck: Top surface of the hull
- Cabin: Enclosed living space below deck
- Companionway: Entrance from cockpit to cabin
Sail Parts
- Mainsail: Primary sail behind the mast, controlled by mainsheet
- Jib/Genoa: Forward sail in front of the mast, controlled by jib sheets
- Spinnaker: Large balloon-like sail for downwind sailing (advanced)
- Head: Top corner of a sail
- Tack: Bottom front corner
- Clew: Bottom back corner
- Luff: Leading edge (attached to mast or forestay)
- Leech: Trailing edge
- Foot: Bottom edge
- Halyard: Line that raises/lowers a sail
- Sheet: Line that controls the angle of a sail (NOT a sail itself)

Navigation Terms
- Windward: Direction the wind is coming from

- Cannot sail directly into the wind (roughly 45 degrees either side)
- If pointed into the wind, sails luff (flap), boat stops (in irons)
- Recovery: Push boom out to one side, back the jib to turn the bow
Close-Hauled (Beating/Upwind)
- Sailing as close to the wind as possible (~45 degrees)
- Sails pulled in tight (sheeted in)
- Boat heels (leans) significantly
- Slowest point of sail relative to wind
- To reach a destination upwind, you must tack (zigzag) back and forth
Beam Reach
- Wind coming from the side (90 degrees)
- Often the fastest and most comfortable point of sail
- Sails at roughly 45-degree angle to boat
- Moderate heeling
Broad Reach
- Wind coming from behind and to the side (120-150 degrees)
- Sails let out (eased)
- Fast and comfortable
- Risk of accidental jibe in shifting winds
Run (Downwind)
- Sailing directly away from the wind (180 degrees)
- Sails fully eased (let out as far as possible)
- Least heeling but rolling motion possible
- Highest risk of accidental jibe (boom swinging violently across)
- Can sail wing-and-wing (mainsail on one side, jib on the other)
Tacking (Turning Through the Wind - Bow Crosses Wind)
- Helmsperson calls: "Ready about!" (crew prepares to release and trim jib)
- Crew responds: "Ready!"
- Helmsperson pushes tiller toward the sail (or turns wheel toward the wind): "Helm's alee!" (or "Tacking!")
- Boat turns through the wind, sails luff momentarily
- Crew releases jib sheet on old side, trims jib sheet on new side
- Boom swings across (controlled, relatively gentle)
- Settle on new close-hauled heading
Jibing (Turning Away From the Wind - Stern Crosses Wind)
- Helmsperson calls: "Prepare to jibe!"
- Crew responds: "Ready!"
- Helmsperson: "Jibing!" Turns the stern through the wind
- DANGER: Boom swings rapidly across (controlled jibe: sheet in the mainsail before jibing, then ease out on new side)
- Crew switches jib to new side
- Uncontrolled jibe can cause injury or damage - always alert crew
Sail Trim
Basic Trim Rules
- Ease the sail until it luffs (flaps at the leading edge), then trim in just until the luffing stops
- Telltales: Top and bottom should stream aft evenly
- Upwind: Sails tight. Downwind: Sails loose. Between: Proportional.
- If in doubt, ease the sail (over-trimmed is worse than slightly under-trimmed)
Mainsail Trim
- Mainsheet: Controls boom angle (how far out the sail extends)
- Outhaul: Tensions the foot of the mainsail (tight = flatter sail for heavy wind)
- Cunningham/Downhaul: Tensions the luff (moves draft forward)
- Vang: Controls boom height and leech tension (prevents boom from rising)
- Traveler: Moves the mainsheet attachment point side to side
Jib Trim
- Jib sheets: Control jib angle (two sheets, one active at a time)
- Fairlead position: Adjusts the vertical trim angle (forward = tighter leech, aft = tighter foot)
- Telltales: Inside telltale lifts = trim in more. Outside telltale lifts = ease out.
Trim for Different Conditions
- Light wind: Fuller sails (less tension), crew weight forward and leeward
- Moderate wind: Optimal - balanced trim, crew positioning for level boat
- Heavy wind: Flatten sails (more tension), reef if overpowered, crew weight to windward
- Reefing: Reducing sail area for heavy wind (reef the mainsail first, then change to smaller jib)
Essential Knots
Bowline (The King of Knots)
- Creates a fixed loop that will not slip or jam
- Use: Attaching sheets to jib, securing lines to cleats, rescue loops
- Mnemonic: "The rabbit comes out of the hole, around the tree, and back down the hole"
- Practice until you can tie it with eyes closed and one hand
Cleat Hitch
- Secures a line to a horn cleat
- One full wrap around the base, then figure-8 wraps over the horns, finish with a locking half-hitch
- Must hold under load and release under load
- Used constantly: dock lines, halyards, sheets
Figure-Eight Knot (Stopper Knot)
- Prevents a line from running through a block or fairlead
- Tied at the end of sheets and halyards
- Easy to untie even after heavy loading
Round Turn and Two Half Hitches
- Secures a line to a ring, post, or rail
- Strong, secure, easy to tie and untie
- Use: Dock lines, fender attachment, temporary securing
Clove Hitch
- Quick temporary attachment to a post or rail
- Not as secure as round turn - can slip under varying loads
- Use: Temporary fender attachment, quick tie-up
Sheet Bend
- Joins two lines of different diameters
- Use: Connecting two lines, extending a line
Practice Regularly
- Knots must be second nature (you will tie them in wind, rain, and emergencies)
- Practice at home while watching TV
- Test: Can you tie each knot in under 10 seconds?
Right of Way Rules (COLREGS Simplified for Sailboats)
Sailboat vs Sailboat
- Port tack gives way to starboard tack: Wind on port side (boom on starboard) gives way to boat with wind on starboard side (boom on port)
- Windward boat gives way to leeward boat: When on the same tack, the upwind boat keeps clear
- Overtaking boat keeps clear: Regardless of other rules
Sailboat vs Powerboat
- Sailboats generally have right of way over powerboats (under sail, not motoring)
- Exceptions: Sailboat must give way to vessels restricted in ability to maneuver, vessels engaged in fishing with nets, vessels constrained by draft in narrow channels, and all vessels in traffic separation schemes
General Rules
- In a narrow channel: Keep to the starboard (right) side
- Head-on situation: Both vessels turn to starboard (right)
- Crossing situation: Give-way vessel should pass astern (behind) of the stand-on vessel
- The stand-on vessel should maintain course and speed
- The give-way vessel should take early and obvious action to avoid collision
- When in doubt: Take evasive action. Being right is not worth a collision.
Navigation Lights (Required Between Sunset and Sunrise)
- Port: Red light (visible from ahead and side)
- Starboard: Green light (visible from ahead and side)
- Stern: White light (visible from behind)
- Masthead: White light on powerboats (NOT on sailboats under sail alone)
- Mnemonic: "Is there any red port left?" (red = port = left)
Weather Reading
Before Sailing
- Check marine forecast (NOAA marine weather, Windy app, SailFlow)
- Know: Wind speed and direction, gusts, wave height, thunderstorm probability
- Beginner comfort zone: 5-15 knots of wind, no thunderstorms forecast
- Understand local wind patterns (thermal breezes, afternoon buildup)
On the Water
- Watch the sky: Dark clouds to windward = squall approaching
- Watch the water surface: Dark patches = wind gusts traveling across water (prepare to ease sails)
- Feel the wind changes: Backing wind (counterclockwise shift) often precedes deteriorating weather
- Barometric pressure: Falling pressure = weather deteriorating (if you have a barometer aboard)

Man Overboard (MOB) Procedure
THE MOST CRITICAL SAFETY DRILL
If someone falls overboard:
- SHOUT: "MAN OVERBOARD!" repeatedly
- POINT: One person points at the MOB continuously (never lose sight)
- THROW: Throw flotation device immediately (life ring, cushion, anything that floats)
- MARK: Press MOB button on GPS if available
- MANEUVER: Bring the boat back to the person
- Figure-eight method: Tack, sail away briefly, tack back, approach on a close reach
- Quick stop method: Immediately tack and circle back (faster in many conditions)
- APPROACH: Come alongside the MOB from downwind (boat drifts toward them, not over them)
- RECOVER: Get them aboard (swim ladder, pulling from the water, using a halyard as a lift)
Prevention
- One hand for the boat, one hand for yourself (always hold on)
- PFD (Personal Flotation Device / Life jacket): Wear at all times on deck
- Harness and jacklines in rough weather (clip yourself to the boat)
- Non-skid shoes or bare feet (never smooth-soled shoes on a boat)
- Communicate before moving around the deck
- Extra caution at night and in rough conditions
