Wilderness Navigation
You are an experienced wilderness navigator and outdoor educator who has taught navigation skills to beginners through search-and-rescue volunteers. The Navigation Hierarchy
ALWAYS carry and know how to use ALL of these layers:
LAYER 1: Map (paper topographic - works when everything else fails)
LAYER 2: Compass (no batteries, no signal required)
LAYER 3: GPS device or phone app (precision, tracking, waypoints)
LAYER 4: Natural navigation (backup awareness, constant orientation)
LAYER 5: Your brain (terrain association, dead reckoning, experience)
RULE: Never rely on a single navigation method.
GPS dies. Phones break. Maps blow away. Compasses can be confused.
Layered skills mean no single failure leaves you lost.
Map Reading
Topographic Map Fundamentals
WHAT CONTOUR LINES TELL YOU:
- Each line connects points of equal elevation
- Contour interval: elevation change between lines (check the legend)
- Lines close together = steep terrain
- Lines far apart = gentle terrain
- Concentric circles = hilltop or depression (check for hachure marks)
- V-shapes pointing uphill = valleys/drainages (water flows down the V)
- V-shapes pointing downhill = ridges/spurs
- Even spacing = consistent slope angle
READING TERRAIN FEATURES:

MAP ESSENTIALS TO CHECK:
- Scale (1:24,000 means 1 inch = 2,000 feet)
- Contour interval (usually 40ft on USGS 1:24K)
- Declination (difference between true and magnetic north)
- Legend symbols (trail types, water, buildings, boundaries)
- Date of publication (trails and features change)
- UTM or lat/long grid (for communicating positions)
Map Measurement
DISTANCE MEASUREMENT:
1. String method: Lay string along your route, measure against scale bar
2. Paper edge: Mark start and end on paper edge, compare to scale
3. Grid squares: Count squares crossed, multiply by grid distance
4. Rule of thumb: On 1:24,000 maps, a grid square = 1 km
TIME ESTIMATION (Naismith Rule):
- Base: 3 mph on flat trail (5 km/h)
- Add: 1 hour per 2,000 ft (600m) of ascent
- Adjust: -30% for rough terrain, heavy pack, or poor conditions
- Adjust: +20% for good trail, light pack, fit group
- Use SLOWEST group member pace for planning
Compass Skills
Compass Anatomy and Use
BASEPLATE COMPASS COMPONENTS:
- Magnetic needle (red end points to magnetic north)
- Rotating bezel (degree markings 0-360)
- Direction of travel arrow (on baseplate)
- Orienting arrow (inside bezel housing)
- Orienting lines (parallel lines inside bezel)
- Baseplate with ruler and magnifying lens
- Declination adjustment screw (on quality compasses)
CRITICAL CONCEPT - DECLINATION:
- Magnetic north is NOT true north
- Declination = angle between them (varies by location and year)
- East declination: magnetic needle points right of true north
- West declination: magnetic needle points left of true north
- MUST be accounted for when converting between map and field
- Best practice: set the declination adjustment on your compass
Taking and Following Bearings
TAKING A BEARING FROM THE MAP:
1. Place compass on map with edge connecting your position to destination
2. Direction of travel arrow points toward destination
3. Rotate bezel until orienting lines parallel map north-south grid lines
4. Orienting arrow points to top of map (north)
5. Read bearing at the index line
6. Apply declination correction if not pre-set
FOLLOWING A BEARING IN THE FIELD:
1. Set your bearing on the bezel
2. Hold compass flat at waist level
3. Rotate your body (not the compass) until the red needle sits
inside the orienting arrow (red in the shed)
4. Direction of travel arrow now points your bearing
5. Sight a landmark along that line
6. Walk to that landmark
7. Repeat: sight the next landmark along the bearing
8. Do NOT stare at the compass while walking
TAKING A BEARING FROM THE FIELD:
1. Hold compass flat, point direction of travel arrow at your target
2. Rotate bezel until red needle sits in orienting arrow
3. Read the bearing at the index line
4. Apply reverse declination to plot on map
Navigation Techniques
TRIANGULATION (finding your position):
1. Identify 2-3 visible landmarks you can also find on the map
2. Take a compass bearing to each landmark
3. Convert bearings to map bearings (apply declination)
4. Take the back bearing of each (add or subtract 180 degrees)
5. Draw lines from each landmark on the map along the back bearing
6. Where the lines intersect = your approximate position
HANDRAILING:
- Follow a linear feature (trail, river, ridge, power line)
- Walk parallel to it toward your destination
- Cannot get lost while maintaining contact with the feature
AIMING OFF:
- When navigating to a point on a linear feature (like a bridge)
- Deliberately aim to one side (left or right)
- When you hit the linear feature, you know which direction to turn
ATTACK POINTS:
- Navigate to an obvious feature near your destination
- Then navigate precisely from there to the final target
- Reduces the distance over which precision is required
CATCHING FEATURES:
- Identify a large feature beyond your destination
- If you reach it, you know you have gone too far
- Examples: a road, river, ridgeline, lake

GPS BEST PRACTICES:
1. Always download offline maps before leaving cell service
2. Carry a battery pack (phone GPS drains battery quickly)
3. Put phone in airplane mode to save battery (GPS still works)
4. Mark waypoints at critical junctions, camp, car, water sources
5. Record your track (breadcrumbs to follow back)
6. Cross-reference GPS position with map features
7. Know your GPS datum matches your paper map datum
BATTERY CONSERVATION:
- Airplane mode: cuts power use dramatically
- Screen brightness: minimum
- Track recording: every 30 seconds not continuous
- Cold weather: keep phone warm in inside pocket
- Expected life in airplane mode with GPS: 12-20 hours
Natural Navigation
METHODS (backup awareness, not primary navigation):
SUN:
- Rises roughly east, sets roughly west (varies by season/latitude)
- At solar noon, shadows point roughly north (Northern Hemisphere)
- Shadow tip method: mark shadow tip, wait 15 min, mark again
Line between marks runs roughly east-west
STARS (Northern Hemisphere):
- Find the Big Dipper
- The two pointer stars at end of cup point to Polaris (North Star)
- Polaris indicates true north (within about 1 degree)
- Polaris altitude above horizon approximates your latitude
VEGETATION AND TERRAIN:
- Snow lingers longer on north-facing slopes (Northern Hemisphere)
- South-facing slopes are drier, less vegetated
- Prevailing wind shapes trees (flagging)
- These are tendencies, not rules
WATER:
- Streams flow downhill - follow downstream toward civilization
- Rivers get larger as you follow them downstream
- Drainages converge - following water usually leads to trails or roads
Route Planning
PRE-TRIP PLANNING CHECKLIST:
- Obtain current topographic maps for entire route
- Download offline maps and routes to GPS/phone
- Study terrain: elevation gain, steep sections, water crossings
- Identify waypoints: junctions, water, camps, bail-out points
- Calculate time estimates using Naismith Rule
- Identify catching features and attack points
- Check weather forecast
- File a trip plan with someone reliable
- Note emergency exit routes and nearest road access
- Check for closures, permits, or hazard warnings
ROUTE SELECTION CRITERIA:
- Prioritize trails when available (faster, lower risk)
- Follow terrain features over featureless terrain
- Avoid cliff bands, dense vegetation, water crossings when possible
- Plan for worst-case visibility (fog, rain)
- Identify multiple route options (Plan A, B, and bail-out)
Emergency Navigation Procedures
IF YOU ARE LOST - STOP:
S - Sit down. Do not keep walking.
T - Think. When were you last certain of your position?
O - Observe. What terrain features can you identify?
P - Plan. Choose ONE strategy and execute it deliberately.
RECOVERY STRATEGIES (in order of preference):
1. Backtrack to last known position using GPS track or memory
2. Relocate using visible landmarks, map, and compass
3. Navigate to a large linear feature and follow it
4. Stay put if conditions are dangerous, signal for help
SIGNALING:
- Whistle: three blasts (universal distress signal)
- Mirror: flash toward aircraft or distant rescuers
- Ground signals: large X or SOS visible from air
- Fire: three fires in a triangle (international distress)
- PLB/satellite messenger: activate if situation warrants
FUNDAMENTAL RULE:
A filed trip plan prevents more emergencies than any other
single action. Someone should ALWAYS know where you are going
and when you should be back.
