Designs an inquiry anchored in a specific local place — using the place itself as a primary text and teaching resource, connecting academic curriculum to what can be learned from direct engagement with the local landscape, community, and environment. Place-based inquiry honours multiple ways of knowing a place — scientific observation, historical research, cultural memory, Indigenous knowledge, and direct sensory experience — treating them as complementary rather than hierarchical. The output includes an inquiry design anchored in a specific place, identification of what the place teaches, a framework for honouring multiple knowledge systems, and an action dimension where students take responsibility for their relationship with the place. He argued that education should help students both INHABIT their places (develop deep, caring relationships with local environments) and DECOLONISE them (critically examine how places have been shaped by colonial, economic, and political forces). Sobel (2004) documented place-based education programmes across the United States, showing that students who learn through local places demonstrate higher academic achievement, stronger community connections, and greater environmental stewardship than students in conventional classrooms. Smith (2002) categorised place-based learning approaches: cultural studies (local history, traditions, arts), nature studies (local ecology, environmental science), real-world problem-solving (investigating local issues), internships and entrepreneurship (community engagement), and induction into community processes (civic participation). Bang, Medin & Atran (2007) demonstrated that Indigenous children who learned through culturally situated, place-based approaches developed more complex and accurate ecological understanding than children who learned ecology through standard Western science curriculum — suggesting that Indigenous ways of knowing nature are epistemologically rich, not deficient.

If physical access is not possible, bring the place into the classroom through photographs, sound recordings, soil samples, water samples, maps, and testimony from people who know it. But no substitute fully replaces direct experience.
- **Critical engagement, not just appreciation.** Following Gruenewald, place-based education is not just "nature appreciation" or "local pride." It includes critical analysis: Who owns this land? How did they come to own it? Whose stories are told about this place, and whose are erased? What economic forces shape it? What environmental damage has been done, and by whom?
- **Responsibility follows knowledge.** If students learn deeply about a place, they develop a relationship with it. The inquiry should include an action dimension — stewardship, advocacy, or service — that grows naturally from the learning.

This canal is a living textbook of ecological concepts:
Scientific knowledge: Water chemistry (pH, dissolved oxygen, nitrate levels), species identification and classification, food web mapping, biodiversity indices. This is the curriculum content — taught through the canal, not a textbook.
Historical knowledge: The canal was built in the 1790s — why here? What was transported? How did the canal shape the area's development? Why did it decline? How did industrial pollution affect the water and surrounding land? The canal's ecology today is the product of its history.
Community knowledge: The canal trust volunteers have monitored water quality for years. They know which sections are healthiest, where problems occur, what interventions have worked. This is citizen science — community members as knowledge holders.
Experiential knowledge: What does the canal FEEL like? What do students notice when they sit quietly on the towpath? The sounds, smells, movements. Direct sensory experience is a form of knowing — ecological awareness begins with attention.
Pre-colonial context: What was this waterway before the canal was built? Was there a natural stream that was canalised? What was the landscape like before industrial development? Who lived here and how did they relate to the water? These questions acknowledge that the canal's history extends beyond the Industrial Revolution.
Phase 1 — Encounter the Place (Lesson 1: field visit)
Students walk the canal towpath in small groups with clipboards. Their task is simple: OBSERVE and RECORD.
Each group observes a different 50-metre section. The school gets permission from the canal trust in advance.
Phase 2 — Question the Place (Lesson 2: back in the classroom)
Students share their observations. The teacher records them: "What did you notice?" Then: "What QUESTIONS does the canal raise for you?"
Expected questions (guided if necessary):
Students select their inquiry question (in groups). The driving question for the class remains: "Is our canal a healthy ecosystem?"
Phase 3 — Investigate (Lessons 3–6)
Lesson 3 — Biological survey: Return to the canal. Students use kick-sampling to collect invertebrate samples from the water (with canal trust guidance and permission). Identify species using ID guides. Map findings onto a biological water quality index. Groups compare results from different sections.
Lesson 4 — Food web construction: Using species data from the field visit, students construct food webs for their canal section. Identify producers, primary consumers, secondary consumers. Discuss: "What would happen if [this species] disappeared? Trace the effects through the web."
Lesson 5 — Human impact analysis: Guest speaker from the canal trust explains the restoration process. What was the canal like before restoration? What interventions were made? What worked, what didn't? Students map human impacts (positive and negative) onto their food webs: "Where do humans intervene in this ecosystem?"
Lesson 6 — Historical ecology: Using the retired geography teacher's booklet and historical photographs, students compare the canal today with the canal 50 years ago. What species were present then? What has changed? Is the ecosystem recovering, stable, or still declining?
Phase 4 — Integrate and Share (Lessons 7–8)
Students produce a "Canal Health Report" — a collective document that answers the driving question: "Is our canal a healthy ecosystem?"
Each group contributes their section:
The report is shared with the canal trust at a presentation session. Students present their findings to trust volunteers and the local councillor. The canal trust can use the data in their own reporting.
Stewardship: Students adopt their canal section for the term. Monthly litter picks (30 minutes, supervised) with data collection: "What types of litter are most common? Where does it come from?"
Advocacy: If the investigation reveals water quality issues, students write an evidence-based letter to the local council or water company, using their data. This is real advocacy informed by real evidence — not a simulation.
Contribution: The species survey data is shared with the canal trust as a contribution to their long-term monitoring. Students become citizen scientists — their work has value beyond the classroom.

Place-based education requires access to place. Students need to physically visit the canal (or equivalent local place). This requires risk assessments, permissions, transport, and time — all of which can be barriers, especially in schools with limited outdoor access or in urban environments with fewer "natural" spaces. The design includes classroom alternatives, but direct experience cannot be fully replaced.
Place-based inquiry takes more time than textbook-based teaching. The canal inquiry above takes 8 lessons — more than a typical ecosystems unit. The depth of understanding is greater, and students develop fieldwork skills alongside conceptual knowledge. But teachers under curriculum time pressure may struggle to justify the additional time. Where time is limited, a single field visit with focused inquiry can provide some of the benefits.
Honouring multiple knowledge systems requires cultural competence. The teacher must be comfortable inviting and valuing community knowledge alongside scientific knowledge — and must handle situations where knowledge systems may appear to conflict. This requires cultural sensitivity, a willingness to sit with complexity, and an understanding that "different ways of knowing" is not relativism but epistemological pluralism.
