Mobile and pastured systems are where poultry enterprise and land management overlap. Managed well, they improve pasture, suppress parasites, and build soil biology. Managed badly — moved too infrequently, overstocked, or run on wet ground — they destroy what they're meant to build.
The three variables that govern pastured system success:
- Stocking density — how many birds per area at any one time

Housing

Housing is the single biggest influence on flock health outside of feed. The most common poultry health failures — respiratory disease, Marek's, wet litter problems, predator losses — trace directly to housing design failures. Get the housing right before worrying about any other health intervention.
The four housing requirements in priority order:
1. Ventilation — the highest priority.
Most poultry respiratory disease is caused by ammonia accumulation and humidity. Ammonia rises from wet litter. Birds breathe at litter level — they are more exposed than you are when you walk in. The target: no ammonia smell at bird height. If you can smell it, the birds are suffering.

Integration
Integrates poultry into other farm enterprises — market gardens, orchards, rice paddies, and ruminant rotations — for land healing and input reduction.
Poultry earn their place in a diversified farm system most fully when they are doing at least two things at once: producing eggs or meat and doing useful biological work — pest control, fertility distribution, orchard sanitation, or soil preparation. This sub-tool designs those integrations.
The integrations worth considering:
Chicken tractors in market gardens
Move bottomless tractors across empty beds between crop cycles. Birds eat weed seeds, slug eggs, and soil pests; their manure fertilises the bed; their scratching breaks up surface crust.
- Move timing: after crop removal and before replanting. Birds should be on a bed for 5–10 days maximum before rest.
- Density: 4–6 hens in a 1.2m x 2.4m tractor, moved every 2–3 days across the garden.
- What they do: reduce wireworm, leatherjacket, slug egg, and cutworm populations significantly. Documented in Ussery and Coleman trials.
- Caution: do not run birds on beds within 90 days of harvest of low-growing crops (food safety contamination risk from fresh manure).
Ducks in orchards
Ducks are the better orchard integration than chickens — they are less likely to damage low-growing fruit and more effective against slug, snail, and grass-dwelling pest populations. They do not scratch as destructively as chickens.
- Stocking rate: 4–6 ducks per 0.1 ha of orchard; adjust to pasture recovery.
- Best season: spring through summer when slug pressure is highest.
- Caution: remove before soft fruit ripens at ground level — ducks will eat it.
- In wet orchards: ducks outperform chickens as they are wet-tolerant and more active in rain when slugs are mobile.
Ducks in rice systems (integrated rice-duck farming)
One of the most documented and productive integrations in Asian sustainable agriculture — ducks in flooded rice paddies eat insects, weeds, and molluscans; their movement aerates water; their manure fertilises; they eliminate the need for herbicide and significantly reduce pesticide use.
- Stocking rate: 10–15 ducks per 1,000m² of paddy.
- Timing: introduce ducklings 1 week after transplanting; remove before heading (ducks eat rice grain).
- Documented outcomes: comparable rice yield; elimination of herbicide; significant reduction in insecticide; duck sales as additional income.
Egg mobile following ruminants (Salatin system)
Described fully in mobile-systems. The integration principle: at 3–4 day lag, birds scratch manure pats, eat fly larvae, distribute fertility, and reduce the parasite burden from bovine manure — a biological pest control and fertility distribution service with egg production as a byproduct.
Poultry for land preparation (New ground)
Running a dense, short-stay poultry pen over new ground — especially weedy or scrubby areas — removes vegetation and weed seeds and prepares the seed bed without tillage. This is a standard technique in market garden establishment.
- Technique: run 20–30 birds in a 4m x 4m temporary pen; move every 3–5 days; birds will clear vegetation to bare soil within 3–5 days at this density.
- Follow immediately with cover crop or cash crop planting — do not leave bare soil uncovered.
Soil health framing for all integrations:
Every integration decision passes through the food web lens: the birds are depositing nitrogen-rich manure. The question is whether the food web can process it at the rate it is being deposited. Short-duration high-density followed by long recovery = biology healing. Long-duration moderate-density static = biology destruction. Rotation interval is the biological management variable.
