Masking fluid (liquid frisket): for small, intricate whites (sparkle on water, twigs against sky), apply masking fluid with an old brush before wetting the paper. Remove after paint dries.

2. Prepare paper correctly

Paper weight determines behavior under water:

• 300 gsm/140 lb+: does not warp significantly; can be used as-is or lightly taped
• 200 gsm/90 lb: warps badly when wet; must be stretched (soak in water 15 min, staple to board while wet, dry before painting) or attached with gummed tape
• Cold press (NOT, CP): textured surface; standard for most styles; holds wet washes well
• Hot press (HP): smooth; excellent for fine detail; washes puddle more on smooth surface

Stretching thin paper is non-negotiable — a buckled sheet causes washes to puddle in depressions and ruins uniform washes.

3. Mix pigment ratios correctly before applying

Wash consistency rule:

• Very wet (milky): use for large, even sky washes or wet-on-wet backgrounds
• Fluid (watercolor consistency): standard painting; flows and blends
• Creamy (saturated): strong darks, final details
• Dry (nearly undiluted): dry-brush texture effects

Mix enough paint for the entire wash before starting — running out mid-wash and re-mixing produces visible blooms and tide marks where the new wash meets the drying edge.

4. Apply wet-on-wet for soft edges and atmospheric areas

When to use: skies, fog, water reflections, background foliage, soft shadow areas.

Technique:

1. Wet the paper thoroughly with clean water (or a thin neutral wash)
2. While surface is wet and shiny (not dull — dull = too dry), drop color into it with a loaded brush
3. Colors will bloom and soften into each other
4. Do not touch once applied — moving the brush disturbs the bloom; let gravity and capillary action work
5. Tilt the board slightly to encourage flow direction

Wet-on-wet timing window: 3–8 minutes depending on humidity and paper absorbency. Work fast.

5. Apply wet-on-dry for crisp edges and defined forms

When to use: buildings, figures, rocks, dark tree shapes against sky, any area needing sharp edges.

Technique:

1. Wait for the paper to be completely dry (dry = matte surface; shiny = still damp)
2. Paint directly with a loaded brush at the correct consistency
3. Brush edges will be crisp and controlled
4. Add detail and texture with drier brush (less water = more texture)

The clean distinction between wet-on-wet backgrounds and wet-on-dry foregrounds produces the classic watercolor sense of depth.

6. Build value from light to dark — never darken after the fact

Rule: every glaze darkens; you cannot lighten. Work lightest passages first.

Sequence:

1. First wash: lightest tone in the painting (often a very dilute overall wash)
2. Second wash: mid-tones, established with flat washes once layer 1 is dry
3. Third wash: darks, applied once layer 2 is dry
4. Final details: calligraphic darks, textures, fine lines

Glazing: transparent layers over dry paint darken and optically mix without muddying. Ultramarine Blue over Burnt Sienna = rich transparent dark (better than mixing black). Alizarin Crimson over Yellow Ochre = deep warm tone.

Allow each layer to dry completely before glazing — wet over damp = bloom and disruption.

Common Mistakes

• Overworking (scrubbing wet paint): Every additional stroke picks up and redistributes dried pigment, creating muddy grey-brown colors. Apply and leave — especially in wet-on-wet areas.
• Using tube paint too dry for washes: Insufficient water produces granular, streaky washes rather than smooth transitions. Test consistency on scrap paper before committing.
• Painting in the whites later: Watercolor white is paper. Any transparent medium over the white area loses it permanently. Plan whites before applying any paint.

When NOT to Use

• When opacity is needed: opaque whites, corrections, or impasto texture require gouache or oil. Watercolor cannot cover or correct; design the painting to avoid these needs or switch media.
