Apply Graduated Entry Point Technique

When an audience isn't motivated by the actual goal but has a specific want of their own, use that existing want, unmodified, as the literal entry point to get them engaged — then execute a planned, disclosed transition to the real objective once engagement is secured.

Why This Is Best Practice

Why best: Trying to motivate an audience directly with a goal they aren't ready for or don't yet value produces the same result as warning children unmoved by an abstract danger they don't understand — no movement. Using their own already-existing, concrete want as the vehicle gets them moving on their own terms; the transition to the actual objective happens only once they're already engaged, when it's far easier to introduce.

Adopted by: Madeline Hunter's "anticipatory set" model — opening a lesson with something students already want or care about before pivoting into the actual curricular objective — became a standard component of U.S. teacher-training curricula (ITIP) after her 1982 "Mastery Teaching." Steps

1. Identify the actual objective you need the audience to reach. State it precisely — this is the destination the entry point exists to lead toward, not the thing you'll present first.

2. Diagnose what the specific audience already, concretely wants. This must be a real, specific want of theirs — not a generic assumption about what "people like this" want, and not the deeper objective restated in different words.

3. Use that existing want, unmodified, as the literal entry point. Deliver genuinely on the entry-point want — don't offer it as bait and then fail to provide it. The engagement has to be real, or the technique collapses into a false promise that undermines the transition that follows.

4. Plan the transition to the actual objective before starting, not improvised after engagement. Decide in advance what the bridge from the entry-point vehicle to the real objective will look like, and how it will be introduced once the audience is engaged — an unplanned, ad hoc transition is where this technique most often fails.

5. Disclose the transition once engagement is secured — don't conceal it indefinitely. The audience should come to understand, at the point of transition, that the entry point was a deliberate step toward something further, not have the real objective sprung on them as an unrelated surprise they never agreed to.

6. Verify the entry-point vehicle bears a legitimate, honest connection to the real objective. The transition works when the audience can see, once it's revealed, why that particular entry point led somewhere connected and worthwhile — an entry point with no real bridge to the objective reads as a bait-and-switch once revealed.

Rules

• Always deliver genuinely on the entry-point want — using it as bait without actually providing it destroys trust and undermines the transition.
• Plan the transition to the real objective in advance — don't improvise it after engagement is already secured.
• Disclose the transition once engagement is secured — never conceal indefinitely that the entry point was a deliberate step toward a further goal.
• The entry-point vehicle must have a legitimate, explainable connection to the real objective — an arbitrary or unrelated vehicle reads as deceptive once revealed, even if the individual steps were each honest.

Examples

Trigger: A teacher needs students to engage with a curricular objective they have no intrinsic interest in. → Open the lesson with something students already care about — a game, a story, a question tied to their own interests — genuinely engaging on those terms first. Once attention is secured, make a planned, disclosed transition into the actual curricular content, explicitly connecting the opening hook to the lesson's real objective rather than abandoning it once attention is captured.

Trigger: A product team wants to convert visitors who have no current interest in the paid product, but do want a specific free resource the company can genuinely provide. → Offer the free resource the visitor actually wants, and deliver it in full. Once engagement is established, transition — disclosed, not hidden — into presenting the paid offering, explaining the legitimate connection between the free resource and the paid product rather than treating the free offer as a bait-and-switch pretext.

Common Mistakes

• Offering the entry-point want as bait without actually delivering it. This destroys the trust the subsequent transition depends on and turns the technique into a deceptive pretext rather than a genuine graduated entry point.
• Improvising the transition after engagement instead of planning it in advance. An unplanned pivot to the real objective tends to feel abrupt or manipulative to the audience, undermining the technique's own mechanism.
• Never disclosing the transition, letting the audience believe the entry point was the whole interaction. Concealing the deliberate structure indefinitely crosses from a legitimate teaching/influence technique into manipulation.
• Choosing an entry-point vehicle with no honest, explainable connection to the real objective. If the bridge can't be explained once revealed, the technique reads as bait-and-switch rather than a genuine graduated path.

When NOT to Use

• When the audience's existing motivation can be evoked directly about the actual goal itself — use apply-motivational-interviewing instead; that technique stays on the real target throughout and doesn't need a substitute vehicle.
• When the entry-point want has no legitimate, honest bridge to the real objective — forcing an unrelated vehicle onto an unrelated goal degrades this technique into deception regardless of how it's executed.
• When transparency from the very first interaction is required by context (regulated disclosures, informed consent, fiduciary relationships) — those contexts require stating the real objective upfront, not graduating into it.
