Direct actors using action-based language (verbs), objective/obstacle framing, and specific behavioral adjustments to elicit authentic performances — avoiding adjective-based direction that confuses actors and produces indicated results.

Why This Is Best Practice

Why best: Action-based direction gives actors something to do rather than something to show, producing authentic behavior instead of indicated emotion — the technical foundation of professional actor training. Adopted by: Judith Weston's "Directing Actors" is the primary professional reference for film and TV directors working with actors — used in film school curriculum at AFI, USC, NYU, and the UK National Film and Television School. The Stanislavski method (the basis of Method Acting, taught at the Actors Studio) and its descendants (Meisner technique, Practical Handbook) form the technical foundation actors use — directors must speak a compatible language. David Fincher, Alexander Payne, and Kathryn Bigelow have described actor communication as the most important directing skill. Impact: Actors trained in classical technique (most professional film and TV actors) are trained to play actions, pursue objectives, and encounter obstacles — not to indicate emotions. A director who says "be more sad" leaves the actor trying to demonstrate sadness (indicating) rather than experiencing a real emotional state that produces authentic performance. Steps

1. Understand the difference between adjective and verb direction

Adjective direction (avoid):

• "Be more sad"
• "Play it angrier"
• "You're really tired here"
• "Seem more menacing"

These directions ask the actor to indicate an emotional state — to demonstrate it from the outside. Professional actors resist indication because it produces false behavior.

Verb direction (use):

• "You're trying to make her feel guilty"
• "You're hiding the fact that you know the answer"
• "You want to stop her from leaving"
• "You're testing whether he'll back down"

These give the actor a task — something they're actively doing — which naturally produces the emotion and behavior the scene requires.

2. Frame notes using objective and obstacle structure

Every character in every scene has:

• Objective: what do they want in this scene? (Always a verb: "to convince," "to escape," "to understand")
• Obstacle: what is preventing them from getting it?

Frame direction in these terms:

• "What your character wants right now is to get her to say she believes you — and she doesn't. Play the desperation of that need."
• "You've been holding this secret for 20 years. Right now, someone is about to find out. What does that feel like?"

When an actor is lost, asking them what their objective is in the scene often immediately clarifies their performance.

3. Use specific adjustments — physical, behavioral, circumstantial

When a general verb note isn't working, specific adjustments change behavior concretely:

Physical adjustment: "Hold the glass as if it's the only thing keeping you steady" or "Don't let her see your hands shake"

Circumstantial adjustment (the "as if"): "Play this scene as if you already know this is the last time you'll ever see her" — adds emotional color without asking the actor to manufacture emotion

Behavioral precision: "When you say 'I love you,' look at her hands, not her eyes — you can't bear to see her reaction" — physical specificity creates emotional reality

Relationship adjustment: "He was your best friend until three months ago. Play what's still there, not just the anger" — adds complexity and contradiction to the performance

4. Create conditions for authentic behavior — preparation and space

Actors perform best when:

• They have had time to prepare (rehearsal; or for emotional scenes, quiet time before the take)
• They understand the scene's context and their character's relationship to every element in it
• The set is calm, not chaotic (unnecessary noise and distraction during performance interferes)
• The director builds trust before demanding vulnerability

Pre-take practice:

• Brief check-in before a take: "Where are you? What does your character want right now?" — helps the actor connect to the moment
• Not necessary for every take; valuable for emotionally complex or pivotal scenes

5. Address performance problems with specific technique

6. Give direction privately when possible

Notes that correct behavior:

• Given in private (quietly before a take, not announced to the crew) — protects the actor's dignity and confidence
• Specific and about the scene, not the actor's ability
• One adjustment at a time — multiple simultaneous notes create confusion

Give actors credit: "That last take was very truthful. I want the same thing but..." rather than "You did it wrong." The relationship between director and actor is one of the few collaborative relationships in filmmaking — protect it.

Common Mistakes

• Result direction ("be more emotional"): tells the actor what result to produce without giving them tools to get there. They will indicate; the performance will ring false.
• Too many notes between takes: actors reset and reconnect between takes; overwhelming them with 5 notes leaves them thinking about notes, not performing. One note maximum per take.
• Directing the camera when talking to actors: if you're thinking about the shot composition while giving an acting note, the actor feels it. Separate the conversations: DP conversation about camera; actor conversation about performance.

When NOT to Use

• Non-actor (found cast) documentary or hybrid films: the techniques above apply to trained actors. Non-actors benefit from different approaches — more naturalistic direction based on real circumstances rather than theatrical technique.
