Why best: Good voice leading makes chord changes imperceptible — harmony flows rather than jumps. Poor voice leading creates unnecessary leaps, parallel fifths that blur harmonic identity, and dissonances that sound like mistakes rather than tension. In any style from Bach to Billie Eilish, smooth voice leading is the difference between professional-sounding harmony and amateur block chords.

Steps

1. Identify the voices — SATB (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) for choral writing; or map to instrument registers in an arrangement. Assign each chord tone to a voice.
2. Resolve tendency tones — The leading tone (7th scale degree) must resolve up to tonic; the 7th of a dominant 7th chord resolves down by step. These are non-negotiable in tonal contexts.
3. Move by smallest interval possible — Common tones between two chords should be held in the same voice; other voices move to the nearest available chord tone.
4. Avoid parallel perfect fifths and octaves — Two voices moving in the same direction by a perfect 5th or octave simultaneously merge into a single perceived line. Check every pair of voices at every chord change.
5. Prefer contrary motion — When one voice moves up, another should move down. Contrary motion creates independence and fullness.
6. Handle the bass independently — Bass frequently makes larger leaps (root motion by 4th/5th) while upper voices move stepwise. The bass is structurally distinct from inner voices.
7. Prepare and resolve dissonances — The 7th of a chord (and any non-chord tone) should be approached stepwise or by common tone and resolved stepwise downward.
8. Audit the result — Sing or play each voice as a separate melodic line; if any single voice sounds unmusical or disjunct, revise the voicing of that chord.

Rules

• Parallel perfect fifths and octaves are prohibited in strict four-part writing — they are tolerated in rock/pop but must be intentional.
• Never double the leading tone — two voices on the 7th scale degree creates an awkward unison resolution.
• Avoid voice crossing — lower voices sounding higher than upper voices creates confusion and balance issues.
• Augmented intervals (e.g., augmented 2nd in harmonic minor) are avoided in strict voice leading; use melodic minor ascending instead.

Examples

C major → G major: Bass C → G (leap of 4th, acceptable for bass). Tenor E → D (stepwise down). Alto G → G (common tone held). Soprano C → B (stepwise down to leading tone... wait — G major has no 7th; B is the 3rd). Result: smooth, contrary motion in outer voices, common tone in alto.

Common Mistakes

• Moving all voices in parallel — sounds like block chords, not voice leading; loses independence.
• Neglecting the leading tone resolution — unresolved leading tones make cadences feel incomplete.
• Spacing voices incorrectly — large gaps between upper voices (more than an octave between S and A) produce a hollow, unbalanced sound.
