Common Mistakes
- Luring too long without fading — animals learn to wait for the lure rather than respond to the cue; fade the lure within 3–5 trials by switching to an empty-hand prompt.
- Skipping marker conditioning — using a clicker or word without conditioning it first means the marker carries no predictive value.
- Poisoning the cue — repeatedly asking for a behavior when the animal cannot succeed (due to distraction or fear) associates the cue with failure; drop back to easier criteria first.
- Reinforcing the wrong behavior — late timing marks something other than the target behavior; practice marker timing on video before live sessions.
When NOT to Use
- When the animal is in acute fear or over-threshold — training cannot occur above the stress threshold; manage the environment first.
- When the behavior problem has a medical root cause — positive reinforcement cannot override pain-driven behavior.
- As a standalone intervention for moderate-to-severe aggression — work under the direct guidance of a veterinary behaviorist.
