Sessions with clear structure enable deliberate practice; unstructured scrimmages alone do not.

Steps

1. Define session objectives (before arriving at the pitch/court)

Every session needs 1-3 maximum focused objectives:

• Technical objective: "improve accuracy of first touch in receiving the ball on the turn"
• Tactical objective: "understand when to press vs. hold defensive shape"
• Physical objective: "build repeated sprint capacity through small-sided games"

Write objectives in behavioral terms (what will athletes be DOING differently by the end?). Avoid vague objectives like "improve passing" — too broad to coach or evaluate.

2. Design the session structure

Standard session architecture (60-90 min session):

3. Plan transitions and organization

Poor transitions waste 20-30% of session time. Plan explicitly:

• Equipment: cones, bibs, balls, goals ready before athletes arrive
• Group formation changes: know exactly how athletes move from grid work to small-sided games
• Instructions: give organization instructions before the drill begins; start the drill immediately after
• Keep breaks short: transition target <90 seconds; longer = attention loss

4. Coach during the session (not just between activities)

Active coaching during activity — not only at breaks:

• Freeze: stop the drill at the exact moment of the mistake or success; demonstrate; restart
• Pop-out coaching: pull one player aside briefly for individual feedback without stopping the group
• Positive reinforcement: immediately acknowledge correct execution to reinforce behavior
• Questioning: use guided discovery — "What could you do differently there?" — before telling

Target the session's 1-3 objectives in all coaching interventions. Resist coaching everything you see.

5. Monitor intensity and adjust

Read the training environment in real time:

• If energy is low: simplify, add a game element, increase success rate
• If athletes are executing easily: add defender, reduce space, add time pressure
• If frustration or errors spike: reduce complexity, add success reps, then re-challenge

Training intensity (physical load) should match the session plan — check athlete body language and RPE.

6. Debrief with three coaching points maximum

End every session with:

1. One thing the team did well (specific, behavioral)
2. One thing to work on next session (the single most important)
3. Preview of next session (or competition)

Invite one question before closing. Keep it to <5 min.

Common Mistakes

• Session without clear objective: Unthemed practice produces scattered learning. Athletes improve faster when they know what they're working on.
• Too many objectives: One well-executed objective > three half-coached objectives.
• Coaching during breaks only: Feedback must be immediate to be effective. Waiting until water breaks for corrections reduces learning.
• Same structure every session: Predictability reduces engagement. Vary game formats, group sizes, and challenge levels week-to-week.

When NOT to Use

• Competition day warm-ups: follow established pre-competition routine instead.
• Unstructured free play / voluntary scrimmages: these have a different role in athlete motivation and should stay unstructured.
