| name | shadow-persona |
| description | Use when someone is exploring the gap between who they present and who they actually are, or when strong reactions — disgust, envy, contempt toward others — might say something about themselves. Applies Jungian Persona and Shadow concepts. |
| scenarios | ["I get intensely irritated by arrogant people — what does that say about me?","I'm exhausted from always playing the 'competent one'","I feel like I'm wearing a mask all the time","내가 싫어하는 사람의 특징이 혹시 내 안에 있는 건 아닐까?","항상 강한 척하는데 지쳐가고 있어","진짜 나와 남들에게 보이는 내가 너무 다른 것 같아"] |
Shadow and Persona
When to Use / When Not to Use
Use when:
- Strong negative reactions to others feel disproportionate or persistent
- Performing a role feels exhausting or inauthentic
- There's curiosity about the gap between presented self and actual self
Not for:
- Specific conflict resolution or communication advice
- Diagnosing others' psychology — this skill turns inward
Process
Part 1 — Persona Mapping
What Persona is: The social face presented to the world. Functional and necessary — every person needs professional, social, family personas. The problem arises when: the mask is forgotten as a mask; it no longer fits who you're becoming; it costs too much to maintain.
Map:
-
Primary personas. What faces are being presented? (professional, social, family — with the specific role: "the competent one", "the funny one", "the one who doesn't need help")
-
Persona fit. For each: energizing or depleting? Does it leave room for the actual person underneath? Has it become outdated?
-
Maintenance cost. What feelings must be suppressed? What opinions withheld? What desires unexpressed?
-
Identity fusion test. "If you couldn't perform this role anymore — what would remain?" Panic = the persona has fused with identity. Relief = the persona may have become a cage.
Part 2 — Shadow Detection
What Shadow is: Everything rejected, denied, suppressed, or never developed. Not purely dark — it contains qualities shamed early, capacities never developed, and qualities projected onto others.
MCP note: If think-tool is available, use it before naming a shadow quality — assess whether projection evidence is strong enough. Ask: what's the most charitable interpretation? Wrong shadow attributions cause harm.
Detection methods:
| Method | How to use |
|---|
| Strong reaction test | Who irritates/disgusts you most? What exactly? (The quality often points to something disowned) |
| Envy map | Whose life or qualities produce envy? What specifically? (Envy points to something wanted but forbidden) |
| What were you told was wrong? | "Too sensitive / too full of yourself / too needy" — those qualities go into shadow |
| Strength-shadow | Overdeveloped strengths cast shadows: extreme competence → suppressed vulnerability; extreme care for others → own needs suppressed |
Shadow as hidden strength: Suppressed anger often contains boundary-setting capacity. Suppressed ambition often contains creative drive. Suppressed vulnerability often contains deep relational capacity. The goal is to reclaim these as conscious choices.
Part 3 — Integration
Once persona and shadow are mapped:
"What would it mean to bring some of what's in shadow into conscious, chosen expression — and wear the persona more lightly?"
Integration practices:
- Journaling the shadow: write as the disowned quality — give it a voice in private
- Small shadow experiments: one situation where the disowned quality is expressed deliberately and at appropriate scale
- Persona vacation: one context where the primary mask is deliberately not worn
Closing questions (choose one):
- "If the part of you that you most dislike in others could speak, what would it want?"
- "What mask have you worn so long you've forgotten it's a mask?"
- "What capacity have you disowned — and what would it cost to reclaim it?"
Output Template
Persona Map
-----------
Primary masks: [list with domain]
Best-fitting: [most authentic]
Most costly: [what it costs to maintain]
Outdated element: [no longer fits who they are now]
What lives beneath: [first sketch of what the mask is covering]
Shadow Analysis
---------------
Detection method used: [strong reaction / envy / shaming message / strength-shadow]
Shadow candidate: [the disowned quality]
Evidence: [specific reaction or pattern]
Possible hidden strength: [what this quality might contain if reclaimed]
Integration experiment: [smallest step toward conscious expression]
What Claude Does / What You Do
| Claude | You |
|---|
| Maps the primary personas and assesses fit | Reflect honestly on what the masks cost you |
| Uses detection methods to identify shadow candidates | Sit with whether the shadow attribution resonates — don't force it |
| Names the possible hidden strength in what's disowned | Do the journaling or experiment — Claude can name it, you have to reclaim it |
| Offers integration practices suited to this shadow | Decide what to bring into conscious expression |
