Direct Marketing Follow Up

Core Principle
"One touch rarely converts. You must have structured, systematic follow-up."
The key insight: Most sales happen after 5-12 touches. Most marketers give up after 1-2. The money is in the follow-up.
The Four-Step Follow-Up Campaign
Step 1: Restate, Resell, Remind
Reconnect with the prospect by:
- Restating the core offer
- Reselling the benefits they showed interest in
- Reminding them of urgency/timeline
Step 2: Present New Information
Share something new:
- A testimonial or case study
- New proof or evidence
- A different angle on the problem
Step 3: Make a New Irresistible Offer
The third touch should include:
- A modified offer (different price, terms, or packaging)
- New urgency or scarcity
- A fresh reason to respond NOW
Step 4: Close or Prune
- Attempt the final close
- Prune non-responders from the list
- Move engaged leads to a different sequence
The Closed Loop System
What It Is
A multi-channel follow-up system that keeps prospects engaged until they buy or exhaust all options.
Example Structure (42 contacts)
Email #1 → Direct Mail #1 → Landing Page Visit → Retargeting
↓
Email #2-5 → Phone Call #1 → Another Landing Page
↓
Email #6-10 → Phone Call #2 → SMS
↓
[Continue until purchase or exhaustion]
The Timing Pattern
Contacts are timed for days 4, 6, 9, 12, etc. — systematic, not random.
The No-Fail Follow-Up Formula
Key Elements
- Multiple channels — Email, phone, direct mail, retargeting, SMS
- Escalating commitment — Each step asks for slightly more
- Fresh reasons — New offers, new proof, new urgency each touch
- Systematic timing — Built into the calendar, not forgotten
The 5-12 Touch Rule
"Most sales happen between touch 5 and touch 12. Most marketers quit at touch 2."
Hole-Plugging Follow-Up
The Concept
Every customer has an "expiration date" (when they should return). Set alarms for:
| Business Type | Expected Return Interval |
|---|
| Dentist | Every 6 months |
| Gym | Every 30 days |
| Auto dealer | Every 3 years |
| Clothing store | Before each season |
The Alarm System
When a customer passes their expiration date without returning:
- Trigger follow-up sequence
- Multiple attempts via different channels
- Offer incentives to return
- Eventually prune from active list
Follow-Up Campaign Templates
Template A: Simple 4-Touch
Day 1: Initial contact + offer
Day 4: Follow-up email (restate)
Day 9: Phone call (new proof)
Day 14: Final email (urgent close)
Template B: Complex Multi-Channel
Week 1: Email sequence (3 emails) + retargeting ads
Week 2: Phone call + direct mail piece
Week 3: Email sequence (2 emails) + SMS
Week 4: Final phone call + escalating urgency offer
Template C: The 42-Contact Campaign
- 21 emails
- 11 offline contacts (mail, phone)
- 2 online presentations
- 14 SMS messages
- Over 11 weeks
Automation Opportunities
What Can Be Automated
- Email sequences (auto-responders)
- Retargeting ads (behavior triggers)
- Phone scripts (but not the calls themselves)
- SMS follow-up (timed triggers)
- Calendar reminders for calls
The Key
"It can all be automated." — but the strategy and creative still need human design.
Key Questions for Follow-Up
/prompts:
- "How many touches am I currently making before giving up?"
- "What's my 4-step follow-up sequence for new leads?"
- "What channels am I using? (Email, phone, retargeting, SMS)"
- "Do I have a closed loop system or just random follow-ups?"
- "What's my customer 'expiration date' and alarm system?"
- "How can I automate my follow-up without losing personalization?"
- "What new offer or proof can I present on touch 3?"
