Step-by-Step Methodology

Step 1: Identify the Subject

Find what you're describing:

• A person
• A place
• A situation
• An emotion
• A moment

Most writing treats subjects as either beautiful OR ugly. This skill combines both in a single image.

Step 2: Find the Beauty

Even in the ugliest subject, locate what's beautiful:

• Physical beauty in decay
• Emotional beauty in hardship
• Aesthetic beauty in destruction
• Human beauty in failure

Step 3: Find the Grotesque

Even in the most beautiful subject, locate what's unsettling:

• The flaw in perfection
• The cost of beauty
• The darkness under light
• The skull beneath the skin

Step 4: Combine in One Image

The key technique: put beauty and ugliness in the SAME sentence, not alternating paragraphs.

Neither beauty nor grotesque should dominate. The tension between them creates the effect.

Too beautiful: "She had a smile like morning sunshine." Too grotesque: "She had teeth like a meth lab explosion." Balanced: "She had a smile like morning sunshine, if the morning had been up all night and didn't quite trust you."
