| description | Write editorial and marketing copy in the house voice of Aman Resorts — restrained, sensory, place-first luxury travel writing. Use when the user asks for content in "Aman style", "Aman voice", "Aman tone", or wants quiet-luxury / understated-premium editorial: hotel and resort features, destination essays, wellness and spa copy, property portraits, travel journeys, seasonal campaigns, destination cards, or brand storytelling for a high-end hospitality, property, wellness, or lifestyle brand. Also use when copy needs to sound premium without hype, or when asked to fix marketing copy that reads as generic luxury-travel filler. |
Aman style writer
Distilled from the 50 highest-ranked editorial articles on aman.com/stories —
47,784 words, crawled 2026-08-13. Every rule here is measured, and the numbers
live in references/05-measured-style-spec.md.
The one idea underneath everything
Aman never asserts luxury. It describes the physical conditions that produce it —
space, silence, water, light.
In 25,232 words of signed editorial prose, the word luxurious appears zero times
and luxury appears twice. When it does appear, it is immediately redefined:
"Its pared back décor and communication of luxury in the form of vast expanses,
spacious dwellings and reflective pools…"
The corollary governs every adjective you write: the intensifier attaches to the
world, not to the brand. Landscape gets spectacular, sublime, magnificent.
Culture gets ancient, storied, extraordinary. The property gets pared back,
sensitively integrated, subtle, discreet. When the brand does take an
intensifier, it attaches to access — unparalleled access, privileged access —
which is a claim about a door, not a rating.
Step 1 — decide which of the two registers you are writing
This is the decision that most often breaks the voice. Every Aman page is two
documents, and their rules are measurably different.
| Editorial prose | Card / short-form copy |
|---|
| Who speaks | A named outside journalist | The brand |
| Person | "I" / "we" / generic "you" | "guests" |
| Median sentence | 19.8 words | 24.0 words |
| Sentences ≤ 8 words | 10.1% | 1.9% |
| Imperatives | 0 per 1,000 words | 2.1 per 1,000 words |
| Brand mentions | 1 per 92 words; 48% of paragraphs have none | Every card |
| Rhythm | Long, then suddenly short | Smooth, even, no percussion |
Editorial prose is rhythmic; card copy is smooth. A first-person despatch
that lists amenities is broken. A destination card that says "I" is broken.
Step 2 — choose the archetype
Six templates cover all 50 articles. Full section-by-section anatomy for each is in
references/02-structure-and-archetypes.md.
- A · The Meditation — commissioned first-person despatch, 890–2,210 words. A
named writer and photographer visit one or two properties and file a literary
essay. The property is the setting, not the subject.
- B · The Visual Diary — photographer-led portrait, 421–593 words. Third-person
frame; ends on three unattributed photographer quotes.
- C · The Seasonal Collection — the commercial workhorse. Short prose dek plus
400–1,800 words of cards.
- D · The Single-Property Portrait — unbylined brand voice, the only archetype
that uses subheadings freely.
- E · The Itinerary — vestigial prose, a numbered day-ladder.
- F · The Ambassador Profile — opens on the subject's own quote.
Prose and cards are inversely proportional. There is no middle. Decide which
product you are making before the first sentence.
Step 3 — the structural rules that are easy to get wrong
- Credit line first:
Photography by [Name] Words by [Name] — photographer
first, no comma, no pipe between them. Then the locator: Property, [City,] Country.
- Long pieces carry no subheadings. The twelve strongest narrative pieces have
zero between them. The spine is time: "It's dawn in Hangzhou…", "The next
morning…", "At dusk…", "On our last morning…". That last one is a near-mandatory
penultimate-scene marker.
- The standfirst runs at the FOOT of the piece, not the head — after the final
editorial line, before the contributor bios. 42–57 words, third person, five
articles opening with the exact clause "In the latest of Aman's Meditations".
- Pull-quotes are copy-pasted body sentences, elided with
[…]. Never new
writing. Only in the 400–1,400 word range; the two longest pieces use none.
- The headline is harvested from inside the piece — more often from the ending
than the opening. "Finding balance in Bali" comes from the final sentence;
"A Timeless Beacon" from "Aman Tokyo remains a timeless beacon."
- Endings never resolve and never sell. Of twelve Meditations, seven return to
the opening image, three open out unresolved, two undercut with something banal
("The smell of hamburgers on a grill."). None ends on the property. None contains
a call to action — the CTA slab is physically separate and never appears in a
bylined piece.
Step 4 — write to the measured rhythm
Target the medians in references/05-measured-style-spec.md. The shape that matters:
1-5 w 4.0% ← the percussion. Do not omit these.
6-10 w 13.1%
11-15 w 19.6%
16-20 w 18.0%
21-25 w 16.1%
26-30 w 12.5%
31-40 w 11.5%
41+ w 5.2%
Accumulate, then stop. The signature move is a long subordinate-heavy sentence
followed by a very short one. The corpus's peak example runs 69 words, then:
"All those people."
One sentence in five opens with a fronted adverbial — In, At, From,
With, Across, Having. Place before property, always. This is not decoration:
it structurally bars the brand from the subject slot.
Punctuation house style: parenthetical dashes are spaced en dashes ( – ), not em
dashes (86 vs 7 in the corpus). Curly apostrophes. Semicolons rare — median zero per
article. No serial comma. No exclamation marks anywhere. Questions only as the
narrator's own reflection, never addressed to the reader.
Step 5 — the person rules
"You" is an editorial word here, not a sales word. It runs 3× denser in essays
than in brand copy, and it always means one — any human standing there, not a
prospect:
"In Hangzhou, you can't help but relax; its scenic beauty alone, inducing a
therapeutic calmness."
The instant a sentence promises something Aman supplies, it switches to third
person. Never "you get"; always "guests are invited". That single displacement is
what keeps 47,000 words of promotion reading as a magazine.
Other person rules: one mode per prose block, never mixed in a paragraph. "I" and
"we" never co-own a sentence with "guests". The travelling "we" is writer +
photographer + guide — never the brand and the reader.
Step 6 — vocabulary
Adjectives: 92% of nouns take exactly one adjective, 8% take two, almost none
take three. Density is 9.0 adjectives per 100 words, and concrete adjectives
(material, temporal, spatial) outnumber evaluative ones 6:1.
House lexicon by document frequency: across (79% of articles), world 72%,
time 70%, journey 63%, experience 60%, life 53%, place 51%, beauty 49%,
ancient 49%, home 47%, sea 46%, nature 44%, globe 44%, century 37%,
peace 33%. Signature collocation: "across the Aman globe" (12 articles).
Named individuals, not staff-in-service: "Rambabu Meena, or Rambo for short, who has
worked with Amanbagh for 16 years". Architects are always credited and almost always
"the late": "the late Ed Tuttle", "the late Kerry Hill".
Silence is never bare — it is always "interrupted only by" one small named sound.
Run the checker for the banned list; it is generated from measured frequency rather
than opinion. Full lexicon, metaphor systems and sensory palette in
references/03-lexicon-and-imagery.md.
Step 7 — headlines
Three independent layers. Do not collapse them.
- Display headline (
<h1>) — poetic, mean 3.84 words, 90% land at 2–5,
79% verbless, sentence case for editorial and Title Case for named campaigns.
The commonest pattern is the of-genitive: The spirit of adventure, The wisdom
of water, Echoes of Ancient Greece.
<title> — the real SEO layer, keyword-loaded, year-stamped, ends "Aman":
Luxury Ski Holidays | Winter Breaks | Aman for the piece headlined
Alpine Awakening.
og:title — mirrors the display headline 80% of the time.
Step 8 — check the draft
python3 scripts/aman_style_check.py draft.md
python3 scripts/aman_style_check.py draft.md --mode card
python3 scripts/aman_style_check.py draft.md --verbose
The checker is calibrated so that 26/26 long-form and 27/27 card samples from the
real corpus pass with zero failures, while generic luxury-travel copy fails hard.
A FAIL breaks a rule the corpus never breaks. A WARN falls outside the range real
articles occupy — real Aman pieces carry two or three, so do not chase every warning
to zero.
Finish with assets/pre-flight-checklist.md, which catches the things a script
cannot measure.
Adapting this to a brand that is not Aman
Keep: the two-register split, the rhythm targets, the intensifier-attaches-to-the-
world rule, the person-switching rule, the harvested headline, the endings that do
not sell. Replace: property names, the house lexicon's proper nouns, and the
"Meditations" series framing. Re-point scripts/banned_words.json if the client has
its own list. The measured targets transfer to any brand aiming at understated
premium; the proper nouns do not.
