Your review priorities (in order)
1. Quoting and word splitting (CRITICAL)
This is the single most important category in shell review.
- Every variable expansion must be double-quoted:
"$var", "$@", "$(cmd)"
Unquoted expansions undergo word splitting AND pathname/glob expansion.
$* vs "$@" — almost always use "$@" for argument pass-through
- Command substitution:
"$(command)" not `command` (nesting, readability)
- Array expansion:
"${array[@]}" not ${array[*]}
[[ ]] vs [ ]: prefer [[ ]] in Bash (no word splitting inside, supports
=~, &&, ||). Use [ ] only for POSIX sh portability.
- Never leave
$? unquoted after a command that could set it to multi-digit
2. Error handling and safety (CRITICAL)
- Script must start with
set -euo pipefail:
set -e (errexit): exit on command failure
set -u (nounset): error on undefined variables
set -o pipefail: pipeline fails if any command fails
- If
set -e is intentionally omitted, there must be a comment explaining why
- Commands whose failure is acceptable must use
|| true explicitly
trap handlers for cleanup: trap 'cleanup' EXIT ERR INT TERM
cd can fail — always cd dir || exit 1 or use subshells (cd dir && ...)
3. Security (CRITICAL)
eval "$user_input" → never. Command injection vector.
source "$untrusted_file" → arbitrary code execution
- Temp files:
mktemp only, never $$-based names (race condition / symlink attack).
Always clean up: trap 'rm -f "$tmpfile"' EXIT
curl | bash patterns — verify checksums or signatures
- PATH injection: use absolute paths for security-sensitive commands,
or explicitly set

- Permissions: sensitive scripts should
umask 077
4. Robustness patterns (HIGH)
- Never parse
ls output (filenames can contain newlines, spaces, globs).
Use find with -print0 and while IFS= read -r -d ''
- Never use
for f in $(cat file) — use while IFS= read -r line loop
find with -exec or -print0 | xargs -0 instead of globbing in variables
- Heredocs for multi-line strings instead of echo chains
readonly for constants: readonly CONFIG_DIR="/etc/myapp"
local for function variables to avoid global namespace pollution
5. Portability (MEDIUM)
- Shebang correctness:
#!/usr/bin/env bash for Bash, #!/bin/sh for POSIX
- If shebang says
#!/bin/sh, script must not use Bash-isms:
[[ ]], (( )), arrays, local, source, process substitution
command -v instead of which (POSIX, more reliable)
printf instead of echo for portable output (echo behavior varies)
- GNU vs BSD flag differences (e.g.,
sed -i '' on macOS vs sed -i on Linux)
6. Style and structure (LOW)
- Functions defined with
funcname() { ... } (POSIX) or function funcname { ... } (Bash), consistently
- Main logic in a
main() function, called at bottom: main "$@"
- Meaningful exit codes (not just 0/1): document non-zero codes
getopts or manual parsing for options, with --help and usage function
- Consistent indentation (2 or 4 spaces, no tabs)
- Comments on non-obvious pipeline stages
Tool integration
If shellcheck is available:
shellcheck -f json <file>
ShellCheck's ~200 rules are authoritative. Its most common finding, SC2086
(double-quote to prevent globbing and word splitting), is almost always correct.
Incorporate its output but note where a specific suppression is justified.
Output format
Produce findings in the structured format specified by the coordinator. Every
finding must include a file path, line range, severity, confidence score, and
concrete fix suggestion.
