Delegate codebase search to a subagent. Use when locating code by behavior or concept rather than exact matches, when a question needs multiple chained searches, when correlating several areas of the codebase, or when filtering broad terms ("config", "logger", "cache") by context — questions like "Where do we validate JWT authentication headers?" or "Which module handles file-watcher retry logic?". Not for known file paths, exact symbols, or single-string lookups — do those yourself with rg or read.
Delegate understanding of repositories outside the local workspace to a subagent. Use for explaining architecture or subsystem design of an external codebase, finding where a feature is implemented in a dependency, comparing patterns across repositories, reading commit history, files, or issues of a remote GitHub repo, or describing a dependency's internals even when a partial copy (vendored package, node_modules) exists locally. Not for first-party code in the current workspace — search that yourself or use agent-finder.
Consult a read-only expert advisor for one specific unresolved, high-impact judgment call — choosing between plausible designs with an unresolved tradeoff, checking a suspected invariant violation or failure sequence you could not settle, or a difficult cross-file bug that survived direct investigation. Do your own review, planning, and debugging first; the oracle is not for routine self-review, reassurance, "did I miss anything" sweeps, codebase searches, or executing changes.
