Why Students Fail AR Questions
AR questions test a META-SKILL: evaluating whether one true statement EXPLAINS another true statement. Students who know both facts individually still get these wrong because they don't understand the relationship logic.
The AR Decision Matrix (MUST memorize)
STEP 1: Is Assertion (A) TRUE or FALSE?
STEP 2: Is Reason (R) TRUE or FALSE?
STEP 3: If BOTH true → Does R CORRECTLY EXPLAIN A?

Science AR Examples
PHYSICS:
A: The resistance of a conductor increases with temperature.
R: Heating increases the vibration of atoms, obstructing electron flow.
→ Answer: (a) — Both true AND R correctly explains A
A: A concave mirror always forms a real image.
R: Concave mirrors converge light rays.
→ Answer: (c) — A is FALSE (virtual image when object is between F and P)
CHEMISTRY:
A: Sodium is stored in kerosene.
R: Sodium is a highly reactive metal that reacts with air and moisture.
→ Answer: (a) — R correctly explains why sodium is stored in kerosene
A: pH of gastric juice is 7.4
R: Gastric juice contains HCl.
→ Answer: (d) — A is FALSE (pH is ~2, not 7.4), R is TRUE
BIOLOGY:
A: Arteries have thick walls.
R: Arteries carry blood away from the heart under high pressure.
→ Answer: (a) — R explains why thick walls are needed (to withstand pressure)
SST AR Examples
HISTORY:
A: Gandhi withdrew the Non-Cooperation Movement in 1922.
R: The Chauri Chaura incident turned violent, violating Gandhi's ahimsa principle.
→ Answer: (a) — R correctly explains A
ECONOMICS:
A: Tertiary sector contributes the most to India's GDP.
R: India has the largest railway network in Asia.
→ Answer: (b) — Both true but R does NOT explain A (railway ≠ reason for tertiary GDP)
Mathematics AR Examples
A: Every integer is a rational number.
R: Every integer m can be expressed as m/1, which is p/q form.
→ Answer: (a) — R correctly explains A
A: The sum of the first n natural numbers is n(n+1)/2.
R: Natural numbers form an arithmetic progression with d=1.
→ Answer: (b) — Both true, but R doesn't directly DERIVE the formula
Common AR Mistakes

2. For EACH question, write:
- Is A true? [Yes/No] — WHY?
- Is R true? [Yes/No] — WHY?
- Does R explain A? [Yes/No] — WHY?
