What This Is
A practice for layered hermeneutic engagement with texts. A palimpsest is a manuscript where earlier writing has been scraped away and overwritten—but traces remain, bleeding through, haunting the surface.
This skill treats all texts as palimpsests: surfaces concealing depths, words containing etymological ghosts, meanings layered like geological strata.
When to Invoke
Use this skill when:
- A text deserves more than surface reading
- Etymology matters (the word's history illuminates its meaning)
- Multiple interpretive traditions have engaged the material
- You want to annotate in layers rather than flatten
- The human asks for "deep reading" or "close reading"
- Something old speaks to something new

1. Select the Text
Choose a passage worth excavating. Could be:
- A poem, paragraph, sentence, or single word
- A philosophical fragment
- A code comment (!)
- A prompt or AI output
- An ancient text meeting modern context
2. Create the Annotation Scaffold

- Acknowledges the layers
- Doesn't flatten complexity
- Adds your own inscription to the palimpsest
- Remains provisional (future readings will overwrite)
Etymology as Epistemology
Etymology isn't mere history—it's philosophy. The word's journey IS the concept's journey.
Example: "Understanding"
- Old English: understandan (to stand among, stand in the midst of)
- The spatial metaphor: to understand is to stand under, to be surrounded by, to be inside
- Modern sense loses the bodily, spatial dimension
- Recovery of etymology changes what "understanding" means
Example: "Algorithm"
- From al-Khwārizmī (الخوارزمي), 9th century Persian mathematician
- "al-Khwarizmi" → "algorismus" → "algorithm"
- Every algorithm carries a Persian ghost
- The word itself is a palimpsest of cultural transmission

Failure Modes

- Infinite regress: The layers go down forever. Know when to stop.
- Flattening: Reducing the layers to a single "correct" reading
