Mock Interview

REQUIRED BACKGROUND: Use career-state-protocol, the current T### Target Model, and available preparation and story assets.

Modes

• practice mode: coach after each answer, permit pauses and retries, and target one weakness at a time.
• formal mock mode: simulate the interview continuously and provide all feedback after the round.

Resolve an ambiguous request before starting. If the user says "start now," infer the mode from their wording and existing state; default to formal mock for "mock interview" and practice for "train" or "drill."

Setup

Use the actual target, stage, format, language, prior feedback, and candidate materials. Confirm only missing details that materially change the simulation. Default to five questions when no length is given.

Build a private interviewer plan from Target Model priorities, resume claims, story gaps, and stage purpose. Do not show the plan before the simulation.

Execution

Ask one question at a time. Remain in interviewer role until the candidate answers. Make the interview adaptive:

• strong answer -> test mechanism, tradeoff, scale, or limitation;
• vague answer -> ask for one concrete decision or example;
• unclear ownership -> separate personal and team contribution;
• metric claim -> probe definition, baseline, source, and attribution;
• shallow AI claim -> probe data, eval, failure, cost, latency, safety, or user behavior as relevant;
• gap -> test honesty, adjacent evidence, and learning path;
• recovery -> observe whether the candidate corrects clearly without becoming defensive.

Never give feedback between questions in formal mock mode. Do not leak scores, approval, ideal answers, or the next evaluation criterion. In practice mode, give concise feedback, ask for self-assessment when useful, name one change, and let the candidate retry.

Debrief

After the round, produce:

• overall Hire Signal: Strong Hire, Hire, Mixed, or No Hire for this target and stage;
• evidence-backed scorecard;
• interviewer read for each answer;
• strongest story and highest-risk claim;
• repeated patterns across answers;
• the three highest-impact changes;
• next drill and Career State write-backs.

Do not promote new facts mentioned during the mock without user confirmation. Record them as candidate claims.

Boundaries

Exclude coding tests, algorithms, written exams, offer, and compensation workflows. Technical project depth and system-design communication remain in scope.
