Run Wildlife Photography

Plan and conduct a wildlife photography session — applying behavioral anticipation, ethical approach distances, fieldcraft (light, position, patience), and exposure strategy to capture authentic wildlife behavior without stressing or disturbing animals.

Why This Is Best Practice

Adopted by: The North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) and Nature Photographers Network both publish ethical field practice guidelines used by professional wildlife photographers and endorsed by wildlife management agencies. Tim Fitzharris's "Wildlife Photography" and John Shaw's "Nature Photography Field Guide" are the most widely referenced professional wildlife photography texts. All major nature photography competitions (National Geographic, Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Audubon Society) require entrants to confirm ethical practice compliance. Impact: Wildlife photography at the professional level requires both technical mastery and behavioral knowledge — a technically perfect image of a stressed, fleeing animal captures neither the behavior nor the ethical standard of the discipline. Photographers who approach too close, play recorded calls to attract birds, or bait wildlife for images produce technically accessible but ethically compromised work. The ethical and behavioral knowledge described here also produces better images: animals behaving naturally produce more compelling images than stressed animals.

Steps

1. Research the subject's behavior and habitat before the session

Wildlife photography rewards preparation:

• Species-specific behavior: when is the species most active? (Dawn and dusk for many mammals; midday for reptiles; seasonal concentrations for migration) Behavior patterns determine when the animal will be in open, photographable situations
• Habitat and location: where does the species occur? What time of year? What specific micro-habitats (edges, water sources, specific food sources)
• Field signs: how do you know the species is present? (Tracks, scat, burrows, vocalizations, food caches)
• Seasonal timing: breeding season, migration, post-molt plumage — timing the session to these events produces peak behavioral activity and peak visual condition in the subjects

Field guides, eBird (birds), iNaturalist (all species), and local naturalist groups are the most efficient research resources.

2. Apply ethical approach distances

The most important ethical principle: the subject's behavior is the guide, not the photographer's equipment:

• Signs of disturbance: direct stare toward photographer, posture change (raised head, alert posture), movement away from approach, alarm calls, changes in normal activity
• Stop when disturbance begins: the approach distance that maintains undisturbed behavior varies by species, location, and individual animal; there is no universal "safe distance" — the animal tells you

NANPA guidelines:

• Do not approach so closely that animals flush (birds) or flee (mammals)
• Do not approach nests, dens, or resting sites; these are the highest-sensitivity locations
• Do not use recordings, calls, or playback to attract wildlife into range; this disrupts territorial behavior and habituates birds to human presence
• Never bait wildlife with food for photography

For baiting questions: all major wildlife photography award programs disqualify images of baited wildlife; baiting disrupts natural behavior and creates human-food association in wild animals. Do not bait.

3. Use light, position, and patience as primary fieldcraft

Golden light: dawn and dusk light is lower, warmer, and more directional than midday light; coincides with peak activity in many species; the combination of behavior opportunity and light quality is the foundation of professional wildlife photography

Position at the subject's level: ground-level perspective for ground-level subjects (insects, reptiles, small mammals) produces intimate, contextual images; standing over a subject produces record shots without connection. Lie on the ground, sit against a tree, use a beanbag from a vehicle window.

Vehicle as blind: many wild animals are less disturbed by parked vehicles than by humans on foot; roadside wildlife photography from a vehicle (engine off, no sudden movement) allows much closer approach than on-foot approach at many locations; use a beanbag or window-mount support

Patience: wildlife photography is primarily waiting in the right place at the right time; the session is usually 70% waiting and positioning, 30% active photography; photographers who rush produce disturbed animals and missed moments

4. Configure exposure settings for wildlife movement

Wildlife requires faster shutter speeds than most photography:

• Moving birds in flight: 1/2000 sec minimum; 1/3200 sec+ for fast action (raptors diving, shorebirds)
• Large mammals walking: 1/500–1/1000 sec
• Stationary but potentially moving subjects: 1/500 sec minimum to freeze unexpected movement

Aperture strategy:

• Wide aperture (f/4–f/6.3): necessary for achieving fast shutter speeds in low light; background blur separates subject from habitat
• Moderate aperture (f/6.3–f/8): increases depth of field for group shots or large animals

ISO: in wildlife photography, raise ISO to maintain shutter speed; a sharp image at ISO 3200 is significantly more valuable than a motion-blurred image at ISO 400; modern cameras handle high ISO (up to ISO 3200–6400) with acceptable noise

Autofocus settings:

• Continuous autofocus (Servo AF / AF-C): tracks moving subjects
• High-speed burst mode for peak action moments
• Eye-detection AF (available in most modern mirrorless cameras): dramatically improves keeper rate for birds and mammals by tracking the eye specifically

5. Practice Leave No Trace fieldcraft

Physical impact on the environment is the other dimension of ethical wildlife photography:

• Stay on established trails and roads when possible; off-trail impact on habitat is often invisible but real
• Do not trample vegetation to reach a subject; the habitat supports the animal; destroying it for a photo is counterproductive
• Leave the location as found: no bending of vegetation, no removal of natural elements to "clean" the background
• Do not publicize locations of rare or sensitive species (nesting peregrine falcons, rare orchids, sensitive bat colonies); this attracts additional disturbance

Common Mistakes

• Shooting toward the light: the classic mistake — approaching a subject with the sun behind you would require the subject to face the light and you to face them, but many photographers approach without regard to light direction and shoot into the backlit subject; position yourself with the sun at your back.
• Flushing and then photographing the flushed animal: an animal that flushes as you approach is already disturbed; continuing to photograph a fleeing animal captures a disturbed behavioral state; retreat and wait for it to return or leave.
• Using playback calls: attracts birds during breeding season when territory defense makes them responsive; disrupts territorial and mating behavior; habituates birds to human presence in sensitive areas; not appropriate in professional wildlife photography.

When NOT to Use

• Captive animal photography (wildlife parks, zoos): captive wildlife photography has different ethical considerations (no disturbance concern, different behavioral context), different technical challenges (barriers, backgrounds), and different image standards (captive images are prohibited from most wild animal competitions and must be labeled as captive).
