Course Completion and Binge Design
Completion = the goal. Design for binge-watching: cliffhangers, mini-wins, momentum. Most courses have 10-20% completion; aim higher.
Completion levers
- Engaging hook — start of each lesson
- Cliffhanger at lesson end — drives next lesson
- Mini-wins — quick achievements per lesson
- Streaks — gamification of consistency
- Community pressure — cohort accountability
- Time anchors — 'this lesson is 22 minutes'
- Easy to resume — last-watched bookmark
Common completion killers
- Boring intro — students give up early
- Too long lessons (>60 min unbroken)
- No clear progress — student loses track
- Lack of practice — no application = no engagement
- No community — students stuck alone
- Hard to resume — find where you left off
- Outdated content — feels obsolete
Measure completion
Track:
- Lesson completion rate per lesson
- Module completion rate
- Total course completion
- Time-to-complete
- Drop-off points (where students quit)
Optimize from data. Most-dropped lessons = fix those first.
