PD Session: Retrieval Practice — From Research to Your Classroom

Session Overview
Teachers will experience retrieval practice as learners (so they understand how it FEELS), examine the evidence for why it works (so they understand the MECHANISM, not just the method), and design a specific retrieval routine for one of their classes (so they leave with a PLAN, not just an intention). The session is designed around the principle that retrieval practice should ADD to learning without adding to workload — every routine designed should take less than 5 minutes of lesson time and require minimal preparation.
Session Plan
0:00–0:10 — Experience It (10 min)
Facilitator does: "Before I tell you anything about retrieval practice, I want you to experience it. Take a blank piece of paper. Write down everything you remember from the last whole-school CPD session — topic, key ideas, any details. You have 3 minutes. Go."
Teachers do: Brain-dump for 3 minutes (most will remember very little, which IS the point). Then turn to a partner and compare: did you remember the same things? Different things? How much did you retain?
Purpose: This IS retrieval practice — and it demonstrates the problem (we forget most of what we hear in CPD sessions). It also creates the motivation: "If we can barely remember last month's CPD, imagine what students retain from our lessons." The experience creates the need for the content that follows.

0:10–0:20 — Why It Works (10 min)
Facilitator does: Brief (10 minutes maximum) presentation of the evidence: Roediger & Butler (2011), the testing effect, Bjork's desirable difficulties. Key message: retrieving information from memory STRENGTHENS the memory trace — it is not just assessment, it is a learning strategy. Two key slides: (1) the forgetting curve — showing how rapidly we forget without retrieval; (2) a graph comparing re-reading vs. retrieval practice for long-term retention.
Teachers do: Listen (this is the 20% facilitator-talking portion). But ACTIVELY: after each key point, the facilitator asks a retrieval question about what was just said. "Without looking at the slide — what is the testing effect?" This models the technique in real time.

Facilitator Notes
The biggest risk is talking too much. If you find yourself presenting for more than 10 minutes continuously, stop. The teachers are disengaging — you're modelling the exact opposite of what you're teaching (passive reception vs. active retrieval). Trust the activities.
Handle scepticism with evidence, not enthusiasm. If a teacher says "This is just another fad," don't dismiss them: "That's a fair concern. Here's the evidence: the testing effect has been replicated in over 100 studies across 40 years. It's not new — it's one of the most robust findings in cognitive science. What would help you feel more confident about trying it?"
Some teachers will already use retrieval practice. Celebrate this. Ask them to share what they do — peer expertise is more credible than facilitator expertise. "Who already does something like this? Tell us about it."
The Post-it wall is essential. Don't skip it. Public commitment dramatically increases follow-through. And the wall itself becomes a visible artefact: "45 teachers committed to trying retrieval practice this week."
Known Limitations
A single session cannot sustain change. Timperley et al. (2007) are unequivocal: one-off PD does not change practice. This session is designed to be the START of a sustained focus — not a standalone event. Without the follow-through plan, this session will produce the same outcome as every other INSET session: initial enthusiasm followed by gradual reversion to previous practice.
The session assumes basic facilitator competence. The plan provides structure, but the facilitation — managing group dynamics, handling resistance, calibrating pace, responding to questions — requires skill. A facilitator who reads the plan like a script will not produce the same outcomes as one who understands the principles and can adapt in the moment.
School culture affects PD effectiveness. In schools with low trust, high accountability pressure, or a history of initiative fatigue, even well-designed PD faces resistance. The session design addresses this (starting from experience, offering choice, respecting time), but it cannot fully compensate for a toxic professional culture. Leadership must create the conditions for professional learning to thrive.
