Concept-Reasoning Expansion (CoRE) methodology for continual learning in medical imaging. Maps image tokens to structured concept libraries, simulating clinical reasoning to guide interpretable expert routing and demand-based model growth. Prevents catastrophic forgetting while avoiding redundant parameter expansion. Use when implementing continual learning for medical image analysis, sequential task adaptation, or scenarios requiring model growth without forgetting.

# Concept-Reasoning Expansion (CoRE) for Continual Learning ## Problem Continual learning paradigms suffer from capacity limits or redundant parameter growth. Image-perception-only strategies struggle with pathological heterogeneity and multimodal variations. ## Core Mechanism ### Hierarchical Concept Alignment 1. Build structured concept library from domain knowledge (clinical categories, lesion types, anatomical regions) 2. Map image tokens to concept library entries via attention-based alignment 3. Concepts provide high-knowledge starting point for future adaptation ### Interpretable Expert Routing 1. Each concept activates relevant expert modules 2. Routing decisions are interpretable (which concept -> which expert) 3. Experts specialize on specific pathological patterns ### Demand-Based Model Growth 1. New tasks trigger growth only when existing concepts cannot cover 2. Growth is guided by concept gap analysis, not arbitrary expansion 3. Knowledge reuse maximized through concept sharing across tasks ## When to Use - Continual learning for medical image segmentation/classification - Sequential task streams with evolving clinical requirements - Scenarios requiring both performance and interpretability - Settings where parameter efficiency during adaptation matters ## Pitfalls - Concept library quality determines overall system effectiveness - Concept-image alignment requires sufficient initial data - Expert routing may create bottlenecks if too few experts - Demand threshold for growth needs careful tuning ## Verification - Performance on old tasks should not degrade (no catastrophic forgetting) - New task adaptation should be faster than from-scratch training - Expert routing should be interpretable and clinically meaningful - Parameter growth should be sub-linear with respect to number of tasks
