Rules
- Every channel must have a clearly defined routing path — unexpected signal flow is the most common source of mix problems.
- The template is a starting point, not a finished mix — every session requires adjustment; the template eliminates setup decisions, not creative decisions.
- Check for phase coherence in the template before using — parallel busses and splits can introduce phase cancellation if not set up correctly.
- Use consistent naming conventions across all templates — "Drums Bus" not "drum buss", "Lead Vox" not "LeadV" — inconsistency creates confusion when revisiting sessions.
Common Mistakes
- Over-processing the template — inserting heavy processing as defaults means sessions start with an already-processed sound; reserve heavy processing for session-specific decisions.
- Missing FX return channels — forgetting to include reverb and delay returns means engineers add them ad-hoc, creating inconsistent routing.
- No VCA or group structure — without grouping, adjusting section balance requires moving many faders individually; groups enable fast, clean balance adjustments.
- Platform-specific templates that don't translate — using third-party plugins in the template that aren't available in other studios; use only native DAW plugins or universally licensed plugins in the template.
