Learning objective: 'Students will [verb] [content] [criteria]'. Specific, measurable, achievable in lesson time.
SMART objective formula
Specific — what exactly?
Measurable — how do we verify?
Achievable — possible in lesson time?
Relevant — connects to course outcome?
Time-bound — within lesson period?
Bloom-verb selection
Match verb to cognitive level:
- Remember: list, recall, identify, name
- Understand: explain, summarize, describe
- Apply: solve, demonstrate, use
- Analyze: compare, contrast, differentiate
- Evaluate: judge, defend, critique
- Create: design, develop, formulate
Examples (cards)
Bad: 'Learn about centering'
Good (Remember): 'Students will name the four grading axes'
Good (Understand): 'Students will explain why centering caps a grade'
Good (Apply): 'Students will measure centering on 3 cards within 5 minutes each'
