Near vs Far Transfer
Near transfer: apply learning to similar situations. Far transfer: apply learning to very different situations. Both needed.
Near transfer
Near = similar situation to where learned
Example: Learned to measure centering on Topps Chrome → apply to other Topps Chrome cards
Importance: builds fluency, confidence. But limited usefulness if only near transfer.
Far transfer
Far = very different situation
Example: Learned centering on Topps Chrome → apply to vintage 1952 Topps centering (different era, different tolerances)
Importance: real mastery. But harder to teach — requires deeper understanding.
Designing for transfer
- Vary practice contexts — practice in different scenarios
- Compare and contrast — what's same/different across contexts
- Underlying principles — teach the why, not just how
- Real-world cases — diverse examples from actual student situations
- Reflection on transfer — 'How does this apply elsewhere?'
- Mentoring on application — coach as students transfer
