BGS Grading System
BGS publishes 4 sub-grades (centering, corners, edges, surface). Pristine 10 requires all 4 = 10. Black Label = Pristine + perfect every axis.
Sub-grade math
Overall grade follows the LOWEST sub-grade with a half-step round:
- 9-9-9.5-9.5 = 9.5
- 9.5-9.5-9.5-10 = 9.5
- 10-10-10-10 = 10 Pristine
- 10-10-10-10 + every back axis perfect = 10 BLACK LABEL
Black Label hits roughly 1 in 100,000 modern subs.
9.5 vs PSA 10 market
| Era | BGS 9.5 sells at | PSA 10 advantage |
|---|
| Modern Pokemon | 0.5–0.7× PSA 10 | PSA dominant |
| Modern sports rookie | 0.6–0.8× PSA 10 | PSA dominant |
| MTG modern | 0.9–1.1× PSA 10 | BGS preferred |
| Pristine 10 (sports) | 1.0–1.5× PSA 10 | BGS premium |
| Black Label | 3–8× regular Pristine | BGS unique |
When to choose BGS
Choose BGS when:
- Card is a Pristine 10 candidate (all 4 sub-grades likely 10)
- MTG submission (collector preference)
- Customer wants sub-grade transparency
- Card has 1 weak axis — BGS half-grades smooth the hit
