Shipping Papers 49Cfr 172 200
Every hazmat shipment has a shipping paper. 49 CFR 172.200. Wrong paperwork = guaranteed inspection violation.
Required elements
Proper shipping name. Hazard class. ID number. Packing group. Total quantity. Number + type of packages. Emergency response telephone number. Shipper signature certifying the description.
Format
Can be a manifest, BOL, freight bill, or dangerous goods declaration. Format flexible; content fixed.
HM ID order requirement
Sequence on the paper must be: ID Number, Proper Shipping Name, Hazard Class, Packing Group (also called 'basic description'). Often presented as: UN1203, Gasoline, 3, II.
Driver's reach requirement
While in the cab, paper must be within driver's reach (door pocket, visor, or pouch on door). When out of cab, in driver's seat or door pocket.
Emergency response info
Either the shipping paper OR an attached separate document (often the SDS). Must include emergency response telephone (e.g., CHEMTREC 800-424-9300). Available immediately.
Multiple hazmat on one paper
Allowed. Each material listed separately. Often grouped at top of BOL with 'HAZMAT' header.
Mixed loads (haz + non-haz)
Hazmat items must be separated/highlighted (printed in different color, with 'X' in HM column, etc.). Driver must be able to identify hazmat at a glance.
Electronic shipping papers
Allowed under specific conditions (49 CFR 172.201(b)(2)). Driver must be able to retrieve quickly without internet dependency. Print-on-demand acceptable.
